IPC has appointed Mike Williams as the new editor of music magazine NME.

Williams, who has worked as deputy editor on the venerable weekly title since July last year, is replacing Krissi Murison who is standing down in June.

Murison, who was the first female editor in the 60-year-old magazine's history, is to join the Sunday Times magazine as features editor.

Williams worked for NME on a freelance basis and became features editor in 2010. Prior to joining NME he was editor of the music magazine Kruger, which he launched in 2004 and edited for six years before it closed in 2010.

"As far as dream positions go, it really doesn't get any better than this," he said. "My challenge is to make NME magazine and the wider NME brand even sharper, our message more coherent and to engage even more with NME's audience of passionate music fans."

NME reported a 14% drop in sales year-on-year in the six months to the end of December to 27,650, according to official Audit Bureau of Cirulations figures. This represents a 4.7% fall compared to the first half of 2011.
