New on Netflix UK: June 2017 – Orange is the New Black returns for its fifth season

Orange is the New Black

Orange is the New Black Season 5, GLOW, Okja, El Chapo, Ant Man and Gypsy among June highlights on Netflix

Orange is the New Black (9 Jun) returns this month for its fifth season and it picks up where it left off with the women reacting to the death of one of its most beloved inmates. The show is set in real time with the women rioting and taking over the prison.

GLOW (23 Jun), which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, premieres for its first season. It stars Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Kate Nash and Marc Maron and is a fictionalized story set in real world of the titular 1980s female wrestling league. OITNB's Jenji Kohen acts as executive producer on this so we can hopefully expect sexism and objectification of women in the entertainment industry to be choke-slammed into submission.

Another new drama series, El Chapo (16 Jun), chronicles the true story of the rise, capture and escape of notorious drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán. Also in TV Will Arnett returns for the second season of Flakd (2 Jun), the final season of Orphan Black airs in its entirety (11 Jun) and Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup star in a brand new ten-part psychological thriller called Gypsy (30 Jun).

Okja (28 Jun) is the first Netflix film ever to have premiered at Cannes Film Festival and it's a moving and funny political satire of the effects of global capitalism directed by Bong Joon Ho. It's about a young South Korean girl who goes on a mission to save her adorable mutant pig from the slaughterhouse that features memorable turns from Paul Dano and Tilda Swinton.

Also in film, the lacklustre Terminator Genisys (2 Jun) sees Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise his role as a cyborg sent from the future and Paul Rudd stars in Marvel's fantastically funny Ant-Man (22 Jun). A new South Korean sci-fi Lucid Dream (2 Jun) and crime thriller Shimmer Lake (9 Jun) appear as does outstanding horror You're Next (8 Jun) which features a splendid turn from Sharni Vinson. And don't miss the first ever horror anthology written and directed solely by women, XX (22 Jun).

The art house crowd will be excited to hear that Julie Dash's phenomenal and poetic film Daughters of the Dust (10 Jun) is appearing this month. Dash was the first African-American woman to have a mainstream theatrical release in the USA and the film is a major influence on Beyoncé's visual album Lemonade. Also look out for Catfight (1 Jun), Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects (8 Jun), Michael Showalter's Hello, My Name is Doris (6 Jun) and David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1 Jun).
