Disenchantment: Part 1 (2018)

SEASON:

Part 1
Disenchantment

Critics Consensus

Disenchantment showcases enough of Matt Groening's trademark humor to satisfy fans -- although the show's overall familiarity and disappointing willingness to play it safe may not bode well for future seasons.

Critic Reviews for Disenchantment Part 1

All Critics (89) | Top Critics (28)

The results are positive, the story is fun, there are laughs to be had and the show brings the subtlety and wit we have come to expect from Groening's creations.

Boldly different to Groening's other work, while looking and feeling familiar. It's short of greatness, but engaging enough to warrant returning for season 2.

Aug 31, 2018 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Disenchantment is incredibly green as a show and it's still finding its feet. It's a new show from another time in every sense of the word.

The jokes are stale, their set-ups are mundane, the plot is predictable, the execution is rarely inspired.

It's designed simply to entertain, which-for the most part-it does.

Aug 17, 2018 | Full Review…

"Disenchantment" doesn't move the story beyond easy parody and old-fashioned humor into a more original and timely place... It's somewhat entertaining, but you may feel as though you've seen it all done before, and better.

Aug 17, 2018 | Full Review…

Disenchantment shares its DNA -- albeit a much weaker strain -- with the comedy of Monty Python with its penchant for visual gags. But it often relies too heavily on outdated ba-dum-tish one-liners and physical comedy.

Jul 23, 2020 | Full Review…

Disenchantment is far from Matt Groening's best work but has a lot of room for potential and is worth a watch if you are a fan of animation.

Oct 8, 2019 | Rating: 6.5/10 | Full Review…

All of the pieces to make something truly wonderful are here - it just feels as though showrunners are assembling them by hastily skim-reading a set of IKEA instructions.

Sep 23, 2019 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

It's a letdown to realize Groening has reduced this epic opportunity to a mere game of moans.

May 28, 2019 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Groening's characters always come equipped with plenty of charm, and while it is not instantly apparent in Disenchantment, you will find yourself rooting for them come the final episode.

May 28, 2019 | Full Review…

The trademark humor is there, with plenty of visual gags to dissect on shop signs and background details, but it's too restrained and pedestrian to make a series like this pop.

Audience Reviews for Disenchantment: Part 1

This show is a bit of an oddity for me. While I am a huge fan of The Simpsons (first 14 Seasons), I have been struggled to like Matt Groening's work outside of that, Futurama being the biggest example. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Enchantment. It is a solidly funny show and the cast voices it well. That being said, I have found its a show that I don't "seek out" when I'm looking to pass some time, like I have for The Simpsons, South Park, and Rick and Morty. These would be my "top tier", with King of the Hill slightly behind that, and then finally to shows like Enchantment. I don't really know what it is exactly, but Enchantment is missing an element that the others have that elevates their shows.

If the first season of Disenchantment had been 6 episodes long instead of 10, my rating would have been a star higher. We first get introduced to the characters and see the beginning of a sinister storyline. Then we have to wait until the last few episodes to get any real character or plot development. I would have been forgiving of the unrelated hijinks in the middle if they'd been funnier; frankly a lot of it felt like filler. There were a few good laughs, but much of the time was spent on fetchquests and boring action sequences. The Hansel and Gretel bit, for example, would have been hilarious as a side gag that lasted a minute or two. Unfortunately, it got dragged on so long it ended up being macabre and... weird. It's a perfect encapsulation of Season 1; there are seeds of brilliance, but ultimately the whole thing just ends up feeling stretched. I do think the payoff at the end is worth fighting through the slog in the middle. That said, I would not blame you one bit if you gave up after a few episodes. It's hard not to compare Disenchantment to Futurama. The art, the humor, and several of the voices make the comparison unavoidable. That's a real shame, because it's inevitably going to lead to disappointment. Futurama began with a wide open world. We wanted to stand right alongside Fry and explore the future with him. Disenchantment immediately reveals the main plot thread, and then largely ignores it for seven episodes. More frustratingly, while the characters in Futurama felt fresh and original, many of the characters in Disenchantment come off as tired caricatures. Still good for some laughs, but the sparks of creativity are a lot less frequent.

Great piece of animated tv series. Love the irony and the plot

I love this series, I love the Simpsons and I loved Futurama.

It took a little while for me to truly get into it, but once I did, I loved it.

Disappointing when compared to Groening's previous shows, disenchantment starts very slowly. However, it does build momentum both narratively and comedically as the show progresses.

A good show with fun characters and a good plot. The lack of good jokes is what brings it down.
  • Nov 11, 2019
While Season 1 dragged halfway through, I still enjoyed Disenchantment. The plot isn't that original, but the last couple of episodes of this first season were definitely superior to the show's start.
  • Nov 01, 2019
Though the show is decently animated and offer a nice twist on the Simpson style, it lacks the bite of Futurama. Though it's never actually boring to watch, I do find myself getting a bit drowsy trying to follow it. It doesn't help that the cast is much smaller than in other Groening productions and the humor quite repetitive after a while. The episodic nature of the show also doesn't help when most people are gonna binge-watch anyway and the few plot threads there are only pay off in the last episodes. Still though the show is saved by the endearing nature of its characters where Groening shines as always.
