EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s drama series Gypsy will not be returning for a second season. I have learned that the Internet TV network has opted not to proceed with a second installment of the psychological thriller starring Naomi Watts. Netflix declined comment.
The development is somewhat surprising because Netflix had been in conversations with the producers about a second season and the cancellation decision comes after a writers room had been up and running for four weeks, working on storylines and scripts for Season 2.
Gypsy, which marked two-time Oscar nominee Watts’ first starring TV series role, hailed from Universal Television, Working Title and writer Lisa Rubin. It debuted on June 30 to mixed reviews. Gypsy‘s cancellation comes just as Netflix renewed another new series that launched at the same time as Gypsy, women’s wrestling comedy GLOW. The streaming network also has renewed the other new drama series to launch in the first half of 2017, Marvel’s Iron Fist and 13 Reasons Why.
Gypsy centered on Jean Holloway (Watts), a Manhattan therapist with a seemingly picturesque life who begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives. As the borders of Jean’s professional life and personal fantasies become blurred, she descends into a world where the forces of desire and reality are disastrously at odds. The cast also included Billy Crudup as Jean’s husband and Sophie Cookson, Lucy Boynton and Karl Glusman as three of her patients. Liza Chasin, Rubin, Watts and Rudd Simmons executive produced.
Netflix is going to crash. It’s gonna be ugly, folks
Sell your shares you I can buy them.
There will be an ugly crash, that’s for sure. Broadcast is dying (the upcoming season looks worse than ever) and cable will follow. There’s a mad scramble to the streaming lifeboats but there won’t be room for everyone.
Netflix and Amazon are comfortable in their own lifeboats. It’s the other ones you should keep an eye on.
Now can we have Naomi Watts in season 2 Big little lies? Just like she’s supposed to be
By fat the worst show they’ve put out. Didn’t think it could get worse than Ozark….i was wrong.
Ozark? Why the loathing?
As a dark comedy it’s not bad. Also Laura Linny and Bateman…love
Ozark is brilliant. You must be on crack or into dumb shows.
Agreed
Ozark is an amalgamation of many other great shows just not nearly as good. It’s not the worst but certainly not original enough
you are crazy, OZARK is GREAT
Ozark is a great show! However, taste is subjective.
I agree.
Ozark is great!
Oh, poor, i just finished binge watching the show and liked it, which is rare for Netflix.
I liked it, too. Thought it was really compelling and unique.
Although I love the cast the story is (YAWNs) a little boring and just doesn’t grab me from the start and draw me into wanting to watch. “Who cares?” is what it really comes down to it. Not me.
It was bad.
Thank God Naomi Watts has Twin Peaks because it’s been downhill for her after Birdman.
Wonder what the cost of this one was?
Not a surprise. I struggled to get through the first season and seriously contemplated abandoning it multiple times despite my love for Naomi Watts.
I could say the same thing for all of her movies for the past five years or so. Everything since The Impossible.
Who is choosing all these awful projects? Her agent or herself? If it’s her agent, she needs to fire him/her pronto.
I’ve come to the decision that her rare good performances (The Impossible, Mulholland Drive) were flukes and she’s actually not all that because she’s been in so much trash.
Her career has come full circle. Trash to quality to trash.
She’s either a bad actress or a good one.. I don’t feel her talent is an issue. Good actors/actresses make poor choices..
Just when it was getting good! Said nobody ever. This will teach Netflix not to trust an inexperienced, laughably bad writer to helm a show that is basically an extension of some sort of writer workshop fan fiction. So cliched and trite and sophomoric I actually had second hand embarrassment for the actors. What was Netflix thinking? Lot of money spent and Naomi Watts needs a new agent, to waste her considerable talent on that awful dreck was a mockery. Lots of things were cribbed from other sources. Just saying. Go back and take a look. If you dare. Maybe when you’re in the dentist chair.
Then again The OA was laughable yet reportedly found an audience. And Adam Sandler movies do great for Netflix.
Netflix has fully embraced the Nobody Knows Anything mantra. They try everything and just see if it works.
Good riddance. I watched it for ten whole minutes before I realized no one was going to start singing the Styne/Sondheim songs.
That’s so messed up. That was a great series. I was looking forward to it, Netflix is becoming a joke. I watch amazin more even though I have to pay. Hulu as well. Netflix gets rid of everything good. And the shows they have now suck. Keep up the good work Netflix. I’m cancellling my subscription.
Don’t cancel until you see the show Seven Seconds. You will want to keep Netflix after seeing that show.
Smart move fro Netflix, no need wasting good money on poorly written shows
Oh… what a surprise… Netflix’s cancellation rampage strikes back… ¬_¬
I can’t say I really liked it, but I enjoyed it (it’s pretty easy to watch a Netflix show over the weekend or a week and forget about it).
This is no surprise, bad critics, not enough people watching… But hell, what Netflix should really do is stop developing open-ended series if they’re not already renewed before the release. They’re turning into a broadcast.
What next? I have in my queue Atypical and Ozark. Mixed reviews and not enough noise in the industry. Cancelled? Are the open-ended too? ¬_¬
Anthologies look like the future then.
i love this show. especially because of Diane & Sidney’s relationship. it’s also a good show for me. Knowing there’s no more second season is heartbreaking :(
This is an amazing show with so many twist and turns. An amazing cast. You jumped the fun on this one. Consider bringing it back. So many mistakes on the part of Netflix.
Wow. Bad choice Netflix. You could have gone so many places with that show. SMH
Netflix owes $20 Billion and lost its contract with Disney/Pixar because the latter is going to build its own platform for streaming, so it may have cut “Gypsy” (and will likely cut other shows) to save money.
Yeah, this show is bad. REALLY BAD.
I think after four episodes, I was done.
They all can’t be winners.

Love Naomi Watts in a film role, she can not carry long format television. Couldn’t stay connected to her in this journey, while her supporting actors out shined her.
It was boring and terrible
I understand I am not the only person watching Netflix, so I wish we had a way to filter programs better like foreign programs from English programs, like they have Other genres.
I couldn’t get into Gypsy, I found it slow and drawn out.
I think it is a shame that they cancelled gypsy. Unlike the other reviews out there, I found it extremely compelling and loved the psychological twists and turns. I think it was a big mistake and one of the only shows I have enjoyed on Netflix
I think it is a real shame that Netflix decided not to continue on with the second season of the show Gypsy. I found it compelling, and I love the psychological twists and turns. I personally thought it was one of Netflix’s greatest shows but apparently not everyone agrees. Personally, I really enjoyed the show and was looking forward to season 2
I think we have to remember that netflix is just not for the USA but worldwide other countries might not have been so enamoured of a series like this.
