It’s now official: 13 Reasons Why, Netflix’s adaption of the bestselling 2007 YA book by Jay Asher, has been renewed for a 13-episode second season to premiere in 2018. Season 2 will pick up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery. (Watch the first teaser below.)
Executive produced by Selena Gomez, 13 Reasons Why has been a breakout. It was well-received by critics and has gotten a lot of attention on social media. Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winner Brian Yorkey, who wrote the adaptation and serves as an executive producer on the series, will take the reins as solo showrunner in Season 2. Diana Son, who was executive producer/co-showrunner on the drama’s first season with Yorkey, is leaving.
Season 1 follows teenager Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker (newcomer Katherine Langford) — his classmate and crush — who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are 13 reasons why she decided to end her life. Kate Walsh, Brian D’Arcy James, Derek Luke, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Alisha Boe, Christian Navarro and Tommy Dorfman also star.
The series, which deals with teen suicide, bullying, drunk driving and rape in graphic detail, has been the subject of active discussion, drawing criticism by some mental health experts who say the show could pose health risks for certain young people, especially those with suicidal thoughts. In response, Netflix amped up its content warnings.
13 Reasons Why is directed by Oscar winner Tom McCarthy; written by Yorkey; and executive produced by Gomez, Yorkey, McCarthy, Joy Gorman, Michael Sugar and Steve Golin from Anonymous Content, Kristel Laiblin and Mandy Teefey. The series is produced for Netflix by Paramount Television.
So is it really happening or its all just Rumors?
Will Hannah’a character be in the season as well? As flashbacks or something…. I can’t wait already!
they confirmed it on twitter and instagram,on both selenas and offical page
omg I want season 2 to finally come
Very impressive writing with an extremely important message for everyone. So very glad to hear that Netflix isn’t caving to the fools that miss the entire point of the story line. This program can heal at its best and perhaps get people talking common sense. Best cure for darkness is light. Thanks for shining a light on the darkness that leads to so many tragedies. Human beings need to look closer at their own reflections and the ripple effects we each have on others.
This program no more causes or glorifies suicide than the series Breaking Bad creates drug cartels.
I’ll have you know I created a drug cartel using information I gleaned from Breaking Bad.
But its a show not an after school special have People not seen the show 90210 my so called life one tree hill the secret life of the american teenager dergassi not the first show to talk about serious issues just the first to make it look like romeo and juelit
Actually, i don’t think it glamorized her suicide or the rapes.. Quite the contrary. It’s a misreading of the suicide scene to think it glamorized it, it showed how effing painful it is. It might have been even worse if she had hanged herself as it takes about 4 minutes to suffocate if you don’t kill yourself immediately, but opening your veins ain’t romance.
I agree with you. The mission of generating broad discussions about teen suicide was powerfully accomplished. I’m glad to know season 2 will deal with the equally important subject of healing from the loss. I congratulate Netflix for taking on the disturbing subject of teen suicide.
As a practicing Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in one of the largest hospitals in the U.S. who just came off a weekend of working on the emergency service, I can tell you for sure that although this show may not cause suicide, it most certainly has played a role in about 20-30% of the presentations we’ve seen in recent weeks, which by the way have been increased by that same amount over last several years at this same time of year. Not only at my hospital but on similar services of about 40-50 colleagues at pediatric hospitals across the U.S. according to the emails flying around amongst us this weekend. Please note, no protected information exchanged via those emails, or here, simply looking at #s of teens presenting who are referencing this show when talking about their suicidality to professionals at the hospital and comparing overall #s of teens presenting in April & May so far this year to same time period in other years at same hospitals. They could have done a similar but better show and called it 13 Reasons Why Not, or any number of other presentations if all they wanted to do was get people “talking common sense” and send a “very important message to everyone”. That would have been commendable. Instead, they have impressively written a show which hits too close to home and depicts suicide entirely too graphically for many teens yet also suggests that from beyond the grave, one might be able to get their “message heard”. Not to mention how much buzz the show has generated. For teens feeling unheard and anonymous, the idea that everyone in the U.S. now knows “Hannah” on a first name basis, is remarkably appealing.
Blame a show for children seeking attention? That’s rich. I don’t care what profession you’re in, the source of youth suicide is within the person. That person needs to be accountable for their own actions.
You’re a fool who obviously does not have children. The world revolves around many more people than yourself. This show is sad, pathetic money grab by a network the knows well how to get impressionable young kids to watch their stuff. This series fails to do it’s own homework on how kids think and feel these days, how they relate to one another through modern communication and how educators and parents are struggling to keep up with the enormous volume of material out there for children to see. This series lays out the worst in people and society without any, repeat any redeeming message. Kids have no idea how to process this and much of the imagery that we’ve allowed to be broadcast indiscriminately to them in a multitude of ways, all of which can circumvent the most diligent parents wishes. It’s an epidemic that is clearly affecting kids these days, everywhere.
Are you speaking from a position of knowledge when you say it doesn’t cause or glorify suicide?
This is absolutely stupid. I just spent the entire weekend watching this very important show. However creating a second season will completely reduce the extreme importance and impact that the first season had.
As the sister of a suicide victim who experienced having to ID her dead brother I think that a second season completely dilutes the message that the adaptation had. The characters may not be real but topics such as rape and suicide should be handles with respect and compassion. I think that the series did that, doing a second season reeks of profiteering and abusing pain for money.
Well they messed up by not having Hanna turn Bryce in your scared so you get raped and kill yourself what about poor Jessica who had no idea what was happening and yet she did not kill her self eveyone says Hannah deserved better no Jessica deserved better
Not to downplay Jessica’s rape but she was not experiencing most of the other things Hannah was going through to get her to that point.
“…doing a second season reeks of profiteering and abusing pain for money.”
Because Netflix created this show in the first place not to make money out of it. Sure… And Trump is DEFINITELY NOT working for the Russians. /sarcasm
I think maybe you should wait until it comes out before you draw that conclusion. Perhaps they handle the second season in the same manner and deliver even more important messages with the same gravity.
It has a big following and I understand why Netflix picked it up but this show absolutely did NOT receive generally positive reviews from critics, in fact it has been widely panned.
The reviews were not only negative but many cited how irresponsible it is in the way it portrays suicide to teenagers.
@GetReal – To quote Daniel Patrick Moynihan, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.” An 85% positive rating from critics (40 different reviewers) on Rotten Tomatoes pretty clearly supports the statement “generally positive reviews from critics”. Other than you stated opinion about it being “widely panned’, where are your facts?
FAKE NEWS!!!
There’s probably only 2 or 3 negative reviews at most and none of them classify the show as bad.
Go to metacritic and see all the reviews for yourself, it was a rating of 76/100.
The way it portrays suicide and its alleged irresponsibility was nothing to do with the quality of the show.
The wet dream show for liberals and SJWs. I should be surprised it is going to get another season but I am not given hoe pathetic hollywood has become.
Hopefully more blame game BS from the character it’ll be about as why should anyone take any responsibility for their actions?
This was one of the worst shows I have ever watched. I actually wish I could get the time back from watching the whole thing.
13 Reasons Why doesn’t touch issues like race, abortion, LGBTQ, political orientations, among others, so how is it a “wet dream show for liberals and SJWs”. Unless suicide and bullying is now supported by conservatives?
Yeah, well, the fact that your autocorrect changes “how” into “hoe” sort of tells us all we need to know about you, doesn’t it?
Wow you are an idiot.
Can you spell? like at all?
I think season two is going to feature a certain student photographer becoming an active shooter in the school…because they are going to touch on all the serious issues of today.
So when did you turn off one of the” worst shows You ever watched?” Was it Episode 2?…..episode 3? ………….When did the boredom overcome you to the point of doing or watching something else.
What if Season 2 proves that #HannahLies?
We had suicides at my High School. I don’t care about this stupid show.
Exactly. Profiteering on the issues that kids are having these days dealing with the world they have been born into unwillingly. We’ve created a very sad, inhospitable place and loaded it with programming like this that profits from our inability to connect to one another. This show does not deal with issues kids are really feeling these days. Instead, a weak and simplistic storyline gussied up with blood, sex and violence and masqueraded as a badge of truth.
School shooting will be in the next one
Photography boy has a crate full of guns that they totally glazed over. Betting this will be the focus of season 2.
Why would they make a season 2 it’s called 13 Reasons Why for a reason? 13 Reasons in the other crappy stuff they
L wanna add on
I predict the 2nd season will follow all 13 characters when they testify in court. Each one will give their recollection of what happened with some telling the truth and others concocting embellished stories.
Should be interesting to see how it all plays out.
YES!!!! I hope it’s true.
**SPOILER ALERT** Guys season 2 has so much to build off of. What did Justin want with a gun and where is he going? What will happen to Bryce specially With Jessica telling her hardcore military father? We wanna see the results of the trial of Hannah Baker and how the Baker’s use her tapes. What’s gonna happen to Alex? Does he survive? Did he actually shoot himself? What about Tyler? Is he planning a school shooting? Because that’s a lot of guns and pictures of people who have wronged him. Where’s Clay going and when will be come back? And for the love of God please do something about Jeff Atkins, I know he died last season but he was still my favourite and his death hurt me more than Hannah’s.
I personally like the show but hope they will change next season into something different than the first. For people who think the show glamorized assault or suicide in any way, I completely disagree, maybe use it as a conversation starter with the youth in your household. These aren’t fun topics to discuss but they are necessary ones. Talk about how your teens see it compared to you, just that little bit could be enough to help someone. A major point of the whole series by the way.
