With an Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG award, all for Ugly Betty in which she made history at the Emmys as the only Latina to win Best Actress in a Comedy Series, a fact still true today, America Ferrera certainly has a lot of evidence on her shelf at home of her unique talents. Now she has added her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Barbie to that list. As Gloria, the “human” character in the year’s number one movie, she got the opportunity to deliver a killer monologue on the value of women that quite frankly became a key highlight in a movie full of them. She joins me today for this episode of my Deadline video series, The Actor’s Side to talk not just about that, but also a career that is exploding right now as she readies to direct her first feature film and is landing all kinds of exciting new roles.
She talks about how she won the role in Barbie, as well as the hilarious Oscar promo she recently did with Jimmy Kimmel and Ryan Gosling to promote the March 10 Academy Awards broadcast. We also talk about Greta Gerwig being a great role model for women in the industry, the experience of being part of a cultural phenomenon, her place in the business as a very visible Latina performer, her landmark motion picture Real Women Have Curves , playing Astrid in the How To Train Your Dragon movies and whether she will appear in the live action version, and so much more.
