Gilmore Girls Revival

Gilmore Girls Limited-Series Revival Set at Netflix — This Is Not a Drill

THIS JUST IN: We’re getting those final four words!

Sources confirm that Netflix has closed a deal with Warner Bros. for a limited-series revival of Gilmore Girls penned by series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and exec producer Daniel Palladino.

Although negotiations with the cast are only now beginning, I’m told all of the major players — most notably Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop and Scott Patterson — are expected back for the continuation. Additionally, per multiple insiders, the revival will consist of four 90-minute episodes/mini-movies.

Reps for Warner Bros. and Netflix declined to comment for this story.

And I repeat: This is not a drill.

The deal allows Sherman-Palladino — who left the original series prior to the final season amid a contract dispute with Warner Bros. — to conclude Gilmore Girls as she always intended, right through to those elusive final four words.

AS-P addressed the possibility of a revival over the summer when she reunited with the show’s cast at the ATX TV Festival. “It would have to be the right everything — the right format, the right timing,” she said. “If it ever happened, I promise we’ll do it correctly.”

When I interviewed AS-P in 2009 at Entertainment Weekly, she conceded that the events of the show’s final seventh season didn’t match up with the end game she envisioned for Lorelai, Rory & Co. “I haven’t [actually] seen the last season,” she said at the time, “but I heard about it from other people.”

Even back then, AS-P remained hopeful that she would get to conclude the Gilmore story on her terms, via a limited series or movie. “The beauty of Gilmore, and the beauty of family-relationship shows, is you never really run out of story,” she said. “You’re going to battle your family until you’re all in the ground. Those things never resolve, doesn’t matter how much therapy you get. Ten years later, there’s still going to be [material] there to mine and to delve into.”

Gilmore Girls premiered on the now-defunct WB network in 2000, before transferring to spinoff net The CW in 2006 for its final season.

Did I mention that this isn’t a drill?

Holy Sh!t!! Amazing if they can pull this off.

  2. C says:

    Whoa!

But oh no, they’ll probably have to write in Grandpa Gilmore having passed away. Tears!

    • Marcie says:

      They’ll reunite for his funeral.

      • Josh says:

That’s my guess. There is going to be something that tore apart Lorelei and her parents again(something they’ll reveal right away as not to dwell on it). And we’ll either get them apart in episode one(with Rory as the go between and Richard on some business trip) or it just opens right away with it.

Of course they can skip right over it but yeah, it will obviously play a major role and I think they’ll go for Lorelei being grief stricken with unresolved issues between her and her father(which will hopefully lead to some sort of renewed bond between Lorelei/Emily)

    • Meg says:

      That will be rough. :(

  3. Luis says:

Goddammit – I held out through “House of Cars” and “Daredevil.” Now you bastards are finally making me cave – damn you Netflix!

  4. tony says:

    There is a god!!!!

  5. Luis says:

Is Rory anchoring on MSNBC yet?

  6. BrightLight says:

I seriously almost just fell out of my chair! It’ll be sad without Richard, but as long as I get me some Luke/Lorelei scenes and any scene with Emily, I’ll be happy…but I’ll be thinking of Edward the entire time.
Well I think I know what my next series to rewatch on Netflix is gonna be!

Conclusion to a great storyline, tragically not everyone makes it. I’m just appreciative to have seen it play through, good bad or indifferent. Ready for the next life.

    • Maryann says:

      Bring back Veronica Mars!

    • Dove says:

I am SO here for a Buffy revival! I doubt it’ll ever happen, but I’d pay a Netflix weekly fee if they did! I mean a REAL revival- Buffy and the Scoobies w/ Angel/Spike updates or walk-thrus.

      • clevertitania says:

Uh, Joss is a little bit busy helming one of the largest franchises in the history of cinema. Sure, I’d love a Buffy revival – hell I still have hope of a full series order for more Firefly too. But it would be a little like asking JJ Abrams to take time from filming the new Star Wars trilogy – when he already stepped away from running the new Star Trek film to do that – so he can do a Felicity revival.

        • Heather Nadelman says:

Am I the only who thinks that asking JJ for a Felicity revival sounds AWESOME?

        • john says:

Joss quit marvel after avengers 2 he has no projects right now

          • clevertitania says:

Joss didn’t “quit marvel.” He burned out on Age of Ultron and said he won’t DIRECT number three. There is no indication he is leaving the entire Marvel universe – especially since he is still Exec Producer on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series. He will likely be a consulting producer, and maybe help write, on future Marvel films.

Joss has done this before – he pushes himself so far that he ends up exhausted and overwhelmed and can’t keep up with what he’s created. Plus he has said that he’s been frustrated by the studio’s interference in how he made Ultron (anyone who tries to contradict Joss on the subject of emotional backstory vs action scenes is a moron). This has happened before – juggling Buffy, Angel and Firefly at the same time nearly put him in the hospital.

And Joss NEVER has no projects. Even when there was a writer’s strike he found something to occupy himself. He made a film in his own house in his off hours. If nothing else, he’s stated that he has the story for Dr. Horrible 2 ready for when everyone has time to shoot it. Plus we know he has some irons in the fire, like the Twist comic he announced at SDCC – and he specifically put off Wastelanders because he was busy with the Avengers.

    • wow! A BtVs revival would be fantastic! How i miss that show!!!

  14. LC says:

Aus, you better not be punking us!! AHHHH! I just screamed a little and my coworker stopped over to ask if I was OK! (told him I saw a bug) THIS IS AMAZING!

    • The Watcher says:

My very first thought was…. “If this is a practical joke, I’m contacting Lord Nikon to come out of retirement and Hack the TVLine-Gibson”.

I can’t believe this is actually happening… Netflix continues to impress.

  15. Shira says:

AHHHHH!!!!!!! Oh sorry, let me write a coherent sentence – AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

  16. Kelley B says:

This is amazing, exciting, awesome, wonderful, unexpected but hoped for news. There were so many things about season seven they were just WRONG! I’m excited for the second chance to get the ending right.

  17. may says:

    yesssssss!!!!!!

  18. Phillip says:

AM I DREAMING?! WTF?! I hope this happens otherwise I’ll never forgive you!

  19. Julia says:

  20. Liz says:

There are tears in my eyes!! There is not happening!! We are getting a real last season.

  21. Lauren says:

Such good news, but my goodness AS-P sounds arrogant.

  22. Lisa says:

    What the actual heck!!!

    YES!!!!

  23. jimbo says:

If this is a prank I am going to go HAM on someone.

  26. Kate says:

    i’m so happy

  27. Lina says:

I really hope they reference the fact that Emily demanded she go first. :(

  28. TJ says:

Totally just screamed really loudly at work to the point where coworkers are asking if I am okay… OMG!

  29. Daphne says:

OMG OMG OMG I’m sooooo excited about this!!! But how heartbreaking that Emily will be a widow…

  30. Liz says:

This is amazing news, the only heartbreaking part is that Edward Herman can’t be involved. I still get misty (especially watching the episodes where he had health scares).

  31. Joey says:

So wait. If AS-P is going to do the ending the way she always wanted, does that mean she’s effectively retconing the finale season? So this revival series will take place after season six? That’ll be really weird, what with everyone 10 years older.

Still though, this is cool. I’m excited.

    • Alice says:

It’s been 10 years- I don’t think anything, besides maybe the arrival of Luke’s daughter, of such a permanent nature happened that they would need to “erase” season 7. Unless she’d planned for Rory to drop out of school- everything else she planned was just delayed a little bit.

      • OyWithThePoodlesAlready says:

Well there’s only that one little detail from Partings that ruined the entire show for me and that was on ASP. She put Lorelai back into Christopher’s bed but now the last season is at fault? She was the one who crapped all over the show and fans because she didn’t get her 2 year contract. She has absolutely no right to blame the poor guy who had to deal with the mess she left.

  32. Heathers says:

What are the elusive final four words?

  33. Alia says:

Very beautiful tribute to Edward Herrmann.

  34. FatherOctavian says:

Please, please, please let this happen. Hopefully they’ll find a way to honor Edward Herrmann’s contribution to the show as well. Perhaps it’s Richard’s funeral that brings everyone back to Connecticut.

  35. abz says:

OMG OMG I never thought this would happen for such a long time. I feel like binge watching the show all over again.
I know they’ll have a lot of things to tackle like Richard’s death :'( and getting superstar Melissa McCarthy to open up her schedule for a return if possible.
Four episodes seems so little but I will take what I can get. Ausiello you better not be joking!

    • Alice says:

It was reported elsewhere that Sookie won’t be in it. I just hope she’s sort of permanently just off screen, and they don’t write her out in a more permanent way. I’m sad, she was a favorite.

  36. NickRnz says:

Holy maze balls!!! That is awesome if it happens! Pleasssse!

  37. Shelley says:

Any word if their most famous dragon fly inn guest will be making a return guest appearance?

  38. JK says:

Tears and excitement. Too many emotions to put into words. Holy crap, never thought this would ever happen. Copper Boom!!!!

  39. Youry says:

There is but one appropriate way to respond to this news: Squeeeeeeeeeee!

  40. Tell me please, that this is not joke! I am starting to screaming from happiness!! YES!

  41. Nicole says:

Best news I have heard all day!!!! My fan girl heart is so exited. Not sure how they pulled it off but I am forever grateful to Warner brothers and Netflix!!!!!!!

  42. Bwhit says:

It’s a good thing I was sitting down when I read this! Best. Monday. Ever.

  43. Lee Mejia says:

I just imagine how impossible it’s going to be to get Melissa McCarthy back now that her celebrity stock has sky-rocketed.

    • thisismenow says:

Bradley Cooper was too big for the Wet Hot Summer Reunion. I would imagine she might make a cameo just to nod towards to the nostalgia. But I doubt she will have anything more than a scene or two. Although, some places are saying she won’t appear in it.

  44. Ray says:

Will they rebuild Stars Hollow set piece for set piece?

  45. Liz says:

I NEED TO KNOW WHO INITIATED THIS SO I CAN PROPERLY THANK THEM. How did this happen??!

  46. Trying to breathe here, not really working…

  47. Columbus says:

The first thing that I thought of: Michael Ausiello is going to go nuts! We’re getting Amy’s version of a finale!

  48. Valentina says:

Please please please, can we also get Matt Czuchry to be a part of this? No happy ending for Rory and Logan destroyed me.

    • Kerry says:

Yes please! We need a happy ending for those two! I was so sad with how they ended it, but now, hopefully, we can get a better one :)

    • JacksMom says:

No Rory and Logan. Alexis has already said her character would have grown beyond those three guys…Sad as I also wanted Rory Huntsberger to kick tail! Melissa McCarthy had better show up because we loved her first 😜 and HELLO if Sid and Nancy aren’t in the reunion we need to riot! LOL

      • whirl says:

There better not be Logan in it, couldn’t stand him, couldn’t watch the final seasons because of him. She definitely needs a new guy!

        • Quintin says:

I agree, I skipped the last season to all together, he was the absolute worse. He was just a spoiled rich brat. And I was so surprised that Rory even talked to him, much less date him, after the way he treated Marty at his stupid “rich boy party”
