The Daytime Emmys Go Hollywood!
Posted Friday, September 09, 2005 10:05:40 PM

Next year, for the first time in its 33-year history, the Daytime Emmys will not be held in New York. In a joint statement, ABC Daytime president Brian Frons and Peter Price, President of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announced that the ceremony would be held clear across the country - in Los Angeles, California.

In recent years, the Daytime Emmys have been broadcast from Radio City Music Hall - with an occasional road trip down the streets of Manhattan to Madison Square Garden. However, this time around the Daytime Emmys will be held at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, the permanent home of the Academy Awards.

The move is seen as a way to attract some additional attention to the struggling awards telecast, which last year saw its lowest ratings ever. The move will also allow soap fans from the West Coast an opportunity to see their favorite soap stars without having to shell out big bucks to make the trip to The Big Apple. Another benefit of the West Coast broadcast is that the Hollywood broadcast will make it easier for the Burbank-based SOAPnet cable channel to cover all aspects of the Emmy ceremony.

In addition to broadcasting the awards ceremony, ABC will also host the nomination ceremony on its daytime talk show, "The View." The nominees in all of the major categories will be announced live on the air by the show's co-hosts Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck and a gathering of daytime stars. The date of the Emmy announcements has not yet been revealed, however, the announcements usually are made during the second week of March.

It is too soon to tell if the Daytime Emmys will remain in California on a permanent basis. Rumor has it that CBS plans to continue its New York-based broadcasts in 2007. NBC, meanwhile, is reportedly going to bow out of the three network cycle of broadcasting the awards show.

The 33rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC on Friday, April 28th, 2006.
