The Loud House has long been a staple on Nickelodeon. With five seasons, spin-offs, and graphic novel adaptations under the series’ belt, it only makes sense that the Loud family would get the big screen treatment, too. The Loud House Movie, now streaming on Netflix, sees the extra-large, extra-loud Loud clan travel across the pond to learn about their familial roots (and sing a song or two in the process).

The Gist: Lincoln Loud is the only boy in a family of 10 girls. While he is a supportive brother to his many sisters – which include an athlete, pageant queen, scientist, fashion model, comedian, goth, and burrito-loving baby, just to name a few – Lincoln struggles to feel as though he’s appreciated, or has something he’s meant to do. After hearing his best friend talk about how he comes from a long line of bakers, Lincoln decides to dig into his own ancestral history. With the help of his sisters, they discover their father has roots in Scotland. They may not be able to travel there in the most conventional way, but the Loud family makes it work, and they finally arrive in the land of tartans and bagpipes.

Upon arrival, the Louds discover their ancestral home is a castle – and the whole town is named for them. The Louds are Scottish royalty, and Lincoln himself is a descendant of a duke. Lincoln dedicates himself to making the town a better place in an effort to have himself coronated as the duke, and even tries to convince his family to move to Scotland. But with a Loud-hating house employee named Morag lurking in the shadows waiting for her chance to kick the Louds out of the castle, settling in their ancestral homeland won’t be as easy as they all might have hoped.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The Loud House Movie might remind you a little bit of other beloved animated series, like The Fairly OddParentsThe Powerpuff Girls, and Gravity Falls.

Memorable Dialogue: There wasn’t any dialogue I rushed to jot down, though I did get a little kick out of Brian Stepanek saying “ding dang!” in a Scottish accent.

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: As someone who knew little to nothing about The Loud House going into this movie, I was pleasantly surprised. With its simple, charming animation style and a delightful cast of characters, The Loud House Movie is the kind of kids’ fare that is likely to be enjoyable (or at least tolerable) for the whole family. The family on their own are fun to watch, but throwing them into a setting like Scotland and introducing characters voiced by performers like David Tennant and Michelle Gomez really elevates the whole thing. Tennant’s Angus really does steal the show, with all his Scottish wisdom and the catchy tunes he croons to the Louds as they arrive. Sending a beloved animated family on vacation and turning the tale into a movie is not a new move (helllooooo, Rugrats in Paris), but The Loud House Movie teaches some valuable lessons about kindness, identity, and integrity all while immersing us in the glorious cartoon scenery of Scotland.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Thanks to standout voice performances from David Tennant and Michelle Gomez, The Loud House Movie, with its catchy tunes and gentle heart, proves itself a worthy addition to the series canon.
