This is a Wikipedia user talk page. This is not an encyclopedia article, or even the talk page for an encyclopedia article. It is a miserable little pile of secrets. Do not consult it for term papers, doctoral dissertations, Congressional committee reports, ecumenical statements, et cetera. |
This user talk page might be watched by friendly talk page stalkers, which means that someone other than me might reply to your query. Their input is welcome and their help with messages that I cannot reply to quickly is appreciated. |

Dark theme on my user page[edit]
How do I get a dark theme on my user page? All I need to do is get image Solid black.svg and expand it. and change it to white text (including the display title). Here's a test page, the history is funny. I'm not asking you to code anything, btw, but point me to the templates etc. please. Much appreciated. Svampesky (talk) 20:19, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- I think @Chaotic Enby: is the resident expert on having your userpage not look like shit, I more or less gave up on trying to do anything cool with mine. From my experience you can get a lot more utility out of using a templatestyles than inline styling (would be happy to change content model for you if you want a .css page somewhere in ur userspace) jp×g🗯️ 23:48, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- User:Svampesky/testcode.css I tried that already. I just want my user page background to be black and the text to be white. I'll probably be able to work it out, but if its something that'll take less than five minutes for you, that would be great. Confused as to why there isn't a dark theme though. Svampesky (talk) 23:53, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi (and thanks for the ping JPxG)! After testing a little bit on my user page, it looks like you can't use CSS styling directly on the body of the user page, so the best trick would be to enclose the whole user page in a
<div>
element that would take 100% of the user page (no margins/paddings). Then you could style that independently, giving it its own id with<div id="idName">
and then doing something like#idName { background-color: black; color: white }
in the CSS page. Hope that works, good luck! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 10:33, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

FYI[edit]
Hi JP, respectfully, I wish to point out that you're, at this point, more than kinda, wheel-warring with perms on your main account. I wouldn't want you to take my word for it, but I would caution against proceeding in the same vein without confirming. Regards, — Usedtobecool ☎️ 15:09, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Usedtobecool: This is troubleshooting phab:T367025. jp×g🗯️ 19:38, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Usedtobecool: My last removal was for redundant groups I saw no point in keeping. The main point was that it could be bad for statistics. As JPxG said above, the recent perm changes were for testing a MediaWiki bug. Although account creator is still a redundant group, it is fine since he removed it afterwards. I erroneously removed EFM in the removal when EFM is not a redundant group, and I have self reverted. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 02:12, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- Great to hear all's well between the admins, but the logs do give an impression of a wheel war with more than one admin having removed some of JP's perms as redundant, and JP having restored them again without discussion. Reinstatement of account creator right in particular clearly breached WHEEL restrictions, especially since the original action was also clearly stated to be for testing purposes and was reversed anyway. All WHEEL asks is that you discuss it somewhere; I think that's reasonable. I also think 0xDeadbeef's summaries could be better. In both instances, 0xD references discussions but does not link them. If those discussions happened offline, I think that's important to note too. All that said, I should not be editing Wikipedia at all right now, so I leave you two to it. Best, Usedtobecool ☎️ 17:42, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah true. My summaries were not too good. These discussions did happen offline. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 03:42, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

Tech News: 2024-24[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [1]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
- The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the
mw-reference-text
class, Parsoid now also adds thereference-text
class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [2]
Problems
- There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [3]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [4][5]
- The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a
<span class="mw-cite-backlink">
wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [6] - On multilingual wikis that use the
<translate>
system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [7]

Recent changes
- People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [8]
- The new Community Configuration extension is available on Test Wikipedia. This extension allows communities to customize specific features to meet their local needs. Currently only Growth features are configurable, but the extension will support other Community Configuration use cases in the future. [9][10]
- The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [11]
Problems
- Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [12]
- Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [14][15]
- Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [16]
- Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [17]

Why can't people see that these are just funny!? As well as politely note the existence of non-WP views. Oh well, annoying non-WP-article publishers do have a handicap in this context. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:32, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
