1899‘s ship is sunk: Netflix has cancelled the mysterious drama, TVLine has confirmed.
“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” co-showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, who also were behind Netflix’s Dark, posted Monday on Odar’s Instagram account. “We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”
They continued: “That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”
TVLine has reached out to Netflix for comment.
The multilingual, sci-fi mystery series started streaming in November 2022. It was set in the titular year and took place on the steamship Cerberus as it crossed the Atlantic. During the passage, the Cerberus came upon another ship that had completely disappeared months earlier. Very weird, seemingly inexplicable phenomena began to happen soon after. Without spoiling anything, Season 1 ends on a wild cliffhanger that had the potential to radically reset the show for a potential — and now, not happening — Season 2.
What do you think about 1899‘s cancellation? Hit the comments and let us know!
Literally the first time I’ve ever heard of this series. What’s the purpose of so much “content” if you don’t market that it exists? Millions and millions wasted.
It was on my list to watch but there is just so much. I won’t watch it now. Why invest in anything if Netflix is just going to drop it?
It was announced ages ago but took too long to premeire after Dark. I was waiting and waiting for it. Sad to see it only get one season. Even before the pandemic they were taking a long time with this.
TVLine didn’t pay much notice, but it was certainly discussed—especially when the first trailer dropped in October—on other sites, like Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.
.
It’s in my Netflix queue, but there doesn’t seem much point in starting it now. :(
If it’s not on the CW or a reality show, this site won’t generally cover anything fantasy or sci-fi in any kind of detail other than premieres or renewals or cancellation if it hasn’t turned into the next cultural phenomenon . Sad.
FWIW, Netflix did not promote this series nor offer screeners to press. Same as with Bastard Son and the Devil Himself.
I watched it. Many of my friends watched it. We discussed it like crazy (and continue to do so!). The problem with marketing is that it’s easy to target particular demos but much more difficult to market to wider audiences (especially something niche like 1899).
They wouldn’t need so much marketing if they allowed shows to gain their audience week by week instead of just dropping them to be forgotten within a month… It was on my watchlist, but got overshadowed by Wednesday before I had time to check it out (fortunately). Their model is killing more and more shows that could’ve been huge hits if given some space to breathe.
They keep doing this over and over again. It’s like they don’t want people to get engaged with any show because we don’t know if it will be cancelled or what. Personally I will do what a friend does, she waits till a show is finished, then pay for a month, watch all the shows she wants to watch from that platform and then cancel and subscribe to a new platform that has something else she wants to watch.
I am more and more inclined not to start anything new on Netflix.
Agreed… maybe I will only watch shows that have finished their entire run.
This is going to be the norm now on streaming services. If a show doesn’t get millions of watches, it’s going to get canceled. Netflix has stopped spending wildly. HBO Max is going away. Even Amazon has stopped spending a ton of money.
Here we go again. Another potentially great show cancelled by Netflix.
This was in their top 10 for weeks. Netflix is absolutely ridiculous.
Seriously?!?! This show was a hit!
I’m mad .. almost at the end ..now I don’t want to watch the end if it ends on a cliffhanger, and there’s no season 2 .. ugh..
It does, but so much of the season is answered in the final episode.
I’m a big scifi fan but the concept to me doesn’t sound interesting. I don’t like scifi period pieces.
It was fantastic and not quite the period piece you think it is (hence the “twist” at the end).
Sounds reminscencient of The Nevers then.
If a Mercedes 400 series is reminiscent of a Kia Rio, then yeah.
Accurate.
Very accurate.
We all just gotta cancel Netflix.
I was looking forward to watch season 2… Very disappointing
This is a great, suspenseful, gripping show, but I honestly thought the ending was perfect. No need to continue.
It ends on a huge (now pointless) cliffhanger.
I need to cancel Netflix.
Haven’t been this pissed since they cancelled Sense8
Vote with your wallet. It’s the only way.
In fairness, they did green-light a 2.5 hour film after the cancellation to resolve the cliffhanger ending. I give them props for that. (And let’s face it, the global filming must have made the whole thing a ridiculously expensive endeavor to maintain.)
Where did you read a film had been greenlit? I enjoyed the show and I’d like to see the directors be given a chance to finish their story just as they did with Dark.
The final feature-length episode of Sense8, entitled “Amor Vincit Omnia,” aired 13 months after the previous season-2 cliffhanger and runs 151 minutes. On Netflix, it appears as the 12th episode of season 2.
I no longer jump on a series at Netflix until A. All episodes have dropped & B. Wait until TVLine tells me if it has been renewed or cancelled! If cancelled I don’t even bother (unless C. It was a limited series)
I’m so annoyed, I was dying for a season 2 of 1899. I was so entranced with the show I binged the whole show in one day and I’ve watched it five times sense. Very disappointing.
Netflix sucks. They cancel so many good shows.
I didn’t like the era. I love scifi and mystery, but the time period was of no interest to me.
They were in a Matrix-like simulation. The show would’ve taken place in the future if it had continued.
Sadly Netflix has started leaning more into cheesy Hallmark type movies and boring reality shows. Neither of which interest me.
To Netflix and producers with potential shows on Netflix, stop with the 8-10 episode seasons with multiple story lines, twist, etc. Is it not obvious by now that people do not have the attention span and/or will skip the show.
A season should be 3-6 episodes and keep to the core story. Or reduce the overall cost of the series. It’s a numbers game and we the viewers are losing.
FYI, I watched all of 1899 and thought it was good but was too long.
So you like your shows on the shallow side?
This is such a bummer!! Amazing show with all the different languages, smart story telling and incredible visuals.
Was invested in the creators three seasons vision.
Thank God. I was so excited for this show and the first 4-5 episodes were entertaining. However, it veered off course and the big plot twists at the end totally lost me, especially the last episode. I ended the last episode seriously angry at the time I wasted on it. Good riddance!
I agree. I totally disliked this. It was interesting enough to keep me watching until the end — with weeks in between episodes, if that tells you anything — but I thought I was stupid.
Loved this show and others before that have been cancelled.
I’m thinking what is the point of watching anything on Netflix. Unless you wait for session two to appear before you start watching season one.
I can’t believe they are dropping this. I was sure it would get a renewal. Netflix content is generally so mediocre that to get a series which requires a little more attention was very welcome. This cancellation means there’s very little quality and hardly worth keeping anymore.
It’s ironic that streaming services pay millions to get their hands on shows like Friends, Greys and The Office, while not understanding that if they don’t let their own shows flourish past a third season than they’ll never anything with that special appeal.
And I’m not naïve, I know that after season three they are supposed to pay residuals, but I still think it’s worth having that sort of legacy content that people want to watch all the time.
Netflix… Every programming decision you make edges me closer to cancelling my subscription.
1899 is a truly original and engrossing sci-fi… What a terrible short sighted decision!
I second the motion. Netflix are cowards to complete good quality sci-Fi. It seems to be a dying breed. Come on Netflix, bring us Seasons 2 and 3 Stop putting out out other lame foreign language shows that are obvious filler material.
I’m not starting any new shows on Netflix until 2nd season is confirmed.
sorry but that ending just did not resonate with me it was like it was tacked on and certainly dod not relate to all that went before it..maybe a good idea to sink 1899 for good
Was waiting for secundaria season
I won’t forget.
