Years ago, I went through an audiophile phase where I bought, evaluated & listened to high end equipment. Eventually, I lost interest in analytical listening & got back to just enjoying the music. I settled on a vintage McIntosh amp & a pair of JM Reynaud speakers and that’s been my system for years. But, I moved into a tiny house & no longer have the luxury of space so I needed a smaller solution.

In the past, I’ve used single Bluetooth speakers by Bose and Bowers & Wilkins. Decent sound but small & not a replacement for a good amp & speakers so I wanted something else. I came across a picture of a Marshall speaker in a high end Airbnb & started researching it. Most of the reviews were of high praise. Amazon warehouse had the Woburn III Bluetooth at a discount so I gave it a shot.

It arrived in like new condition. Not a speck of dust or fingerprints. Setting it up was fairly straightforward although the mobile app is weak. Then I started playing it. I listen to a number of genres of music, rock, jazz, old school country, classical & podcasts.

The first thing I noticed is how big the Woburn sounded, not at all like my previous Bluetooth speakers. For its size, it has a wide soundstage. The notes from low to high are all there & there’s a good separation of the instruments. Vocals are rich and bass is clean & thumping. I am incredibly happy with the sound fidelity. Is it as good as the McIntosh/JM Reynaud system? No. But it is damn close & I wouldn’t have expected it from a single speaker. The Woburn makes listening enjoyable and it doesn’t feel like I had to sacrifice fidelity for it to be the only stereo system in my little house. I recommend it without hesitation.
