The Voice coach Niall Horan uses his Knockout steal to finally get Mara Justine on his team

"I waited for Mara since the Blind Auditions," the former One Directioner says.

Thanks to the three-way Knockout format, in which three artists on a team choose their own songs and compete for one spot to move into the Playoffs, this round of The Voice season 24 is fast and furious. From the get-go, there are surprises and lots of shuffling of team members, mostly owing to the fact that each coach gets one steal and one save during the round.

Anything can happen — and coaches who've been holding out for an artist they've hoped to add to their team since the Blind Auditions might be able to make those dreams come true: that's exactly what happened for Niall Horan when Team Legend's pop singer Mara Justine wound up available for the taking during the second Knockout of the round.

In the Knockouts premiere, John Legend put Mara Justine up against two other four-chair turns on his team: Caleb Sasser and Kaylee Shimizu. Caleb, though an impressive vocalist, chose "Jealous" by Nick Jonas for his Knockouts performance… it doesn't do him any favors. Wunderkind Kaylee, however, kills an Aretha Franklin classic, "Ain't No Way," and grabs the Knockout win, keeping her place on Team Legend. That left Mara Justine, who blew the coaches away with her big vocals on the Mariah Carey version of Harry Nilsson's "Without You." When John let her go in Monday night's episode, both Niall and Gwen Stefani pressed their buttons in hopes of using their one steal of the round on Mara. But in true Voice fashion, we were left waiting overnight to see which coach Mara decided to go with.

Night two of the Knockouts gives us our answer. Gwen praises Mara's ability to connect with a song and to emote, and loves how she is able to make any song — even something as iconic as "Without You" — feel like her own. But Niall lays it on thick. You probably don't have to be reminded, but back in the Blinds, Niall was down on his hands and knees begging Mara to join his team, but after an impromptu duet with John Legend, she went a different way. This time around, Niall makes sure Mara knows that when he thinks about the best voices on the show this season, her name comes to him first. Of course, Mara is going Team Niall this time. "I waited for Mara since the Blind Auditions," Niall says, relieved. "I'm excited to actually, finally, get to work with her." Sometimes dreams do come true on The Voice! You just need a little patience.
