David F. Walker & Sean Damien Hill’s The Hated is Coming To Netflix

Netflix is adding yet another comic book adaptation to its upcoming genre slate. According to Deadline, the streamer is developing a new TV series based on David F. Walker and Sean Damien Hill’s The Hated.

Walker, best known for co-creating DC’s Naomi, financed The Hated through Kickstarter and published the series through Solid Comix. The story imagines an alternate timeline where the Civil War ended in a truce that kept the Northern and Southern states divided into two separate countries with very different slavery laws. Several years later, in 1872, gun-slinging bounty hunter Araminta Free makes it her business to cross the border into the Confederacy and liberate the nation’s slaves. She also hunts down Confederate war criminals, which puts a heavy price on her head.

The streamer has tapped Michael Starrbury to showrun and executive produce the comic’s TV adaptation. Starrbury has already worked on a few standout projects for Netflix. Just this year, he wrote two episodes of Colin in Black & White. He also received an Emmy nomination for his work on 2019’s When They See Us. Starrbury will develop The Hated as part of his new overall deal with Netflix, which he inked over the summer. Prime Universe Films’ Adrian Askarieh and Sean Owolo will also executive produce the series with Walker.

Overall, it’s shaping up to be a solid year for Walker. Not only is The CW’s Naomi TV show right around the corner, his Image Comics series Bitter Root (co-created with Chuck Brown and Sanford Greene) is also getting the film treatment at Legendary with Regina King in the director’s chair.
