Netflix open to more Marvel shows: Any character could get spin-off

Netflix might have even more Marvel titles on the way.

When asked about spinning off characters from the streaming company’s current crop of Marvel titles into stand-alone shows, Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos told reporters Sunday that “any character that’s in there is on the table … It’s always possible. All the characters in the universe could also spin out.”

Sarandos added that there remains a high bar, production wise, for pulling off any new title: “Right now, these are produced at the scale of a major film, so there are long production times and long post times. In some case, when we have character crossover, it makes it more difficult to manage production. It’s not the goal to put out more than one or two out a year.”

Having said all that, Sarandos added there’s nothing yet to talk about regarding reports of spinning off The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) from Daredevil season 2. (We hear there is movement there, however, and that Netflix is looking for a showrunner who can tackle the project).

What’s interesting in all this is Sarandos said “one or two” a year… previously the company announced doing one a year, for four years, and at some point having all the heroes together in The Defenders miniseries. Earlier today, Netflix renewed Jessica Jones for a second season. Daredevil‘s season 2 starts on March 18. Luke Cage is expected to debut this year. And Iron Fist, still searching for its star, is expected in 2017. Allowing the possibility of introducing two Marvel shows a year could have a major impact. “The complex one is really The Defenders,” Sarandos said. “The Defenders’ production schedule will determine a lot of the season 2 and 3 output of those shows.”
