Gareth Edwards‘ 2016 Star Wars movie, Rogue One, will include a musical contribution from Alexandre Desplat, the composer said in a radio interview.
Desplat previously worked with the director on 2014’s Godzilla, and his work on the score of The Grand Budapest Hotel earned him the best original score award at this year’s Oscars.
“When I saw Gareth Edwards’ first film, which was called Monsters, I was really blown away by his talent and so I immediately agreed [to compose the score for Godzilla],” Desplat said during the interview, as quoted by France’s Le Point. “And the good news is that we are going to do another movie together very soon, which is a spinoff of Star Wars. So that is very, very exciting.”
Desplat revealed the news during an interview with French radio station Radio Classique this weekend, the website Film Music Reporter noted.
The news indicates that Rogue One could be the first live-action Star Wars movie that may not include John Williams as composer. Disney and Williams’ reps did not respond to a request for comment.
Earlier in the Radio Classique interview, Desplat praised John Williams’ original score for Star Wars and also recalled that it influenced his decision to become a composer.
Williams’ work on the original trilogy saw him receive best original score nominations for each movie, with his Star Wars score winning him the award. It also won the 1977 Golden Globe for best original score and 1978 Grammy for best album of original score written for a motion picture, with the main title from the original movie also winning the 1978 Grammy for best instrumental composition.
Of all Star Wars projects released in theaters to date, only the 2008 animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars release, which started as a television project, has been released without an original Williams score. Music for that movie was provided by Kevin Kiner, who also scored the subsequent Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series.
