About Deliveries to Switzerland

A number of special features apply to orders and deliveries in Switzerland.

Since 1 January 2019 Amazon applies Swiss Value Added Tax (“VAT”) to products supplied to Switzerland.

A reduced VAT rate of 2.5% of the value of the goods applies to book deliveries only (including e-books).

The standard VAT rate of 7.7% of the value of the goods applies to goods from these departments:

  • Music, DVD, Video, PC and Video Games, Software, Clothing, Sports goods, Jewelry, Watches, Car & Motorbike, Electronics & Photo, Kitchen, Home & Garden, Stationery & Office Supplies, Musical Instruments, Toys

Prices for items sold by Amazon are displayed as inclusive of German VAT and will be adjusted to the Swiss VAT rate at checkout if you enter a Swiss delivery address. If you are buying from an FBA seller who is not registered for VAT in Switzerland, Amazon will take care of the importation VAT for you (if any) and add this to your import fees. You will be able to see your final price inclusive of applicable VAT and customs clearance charges before you confirm your order, when you have completed your order information (including your delivery address). The current shipping costs for goods sold and shipped by Amazon can be found on our Help page on International Delivery Rates & Times

Swiss customs regulations for private individuals using the mail service (Amazon Marketplace orders, incl. Fulfilled by Amazon)

Internationally shipped goods may be subject to excise duty and VAT upon importation. In some cases, when the mail service is used, the customer is considered an importer and is obliged to pay the relevant tariffs. These are levied by the Swiss Mail Service when the shipment is delivered. You will find further details on the websites of the Swiss Customs Authorities.

In order to relieve you from customs formalities, for goods sold and shipped by Amazon as well as for goods sold by VAT registered third party sellers which are fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), Amazon will calculate and charge the Swiss VAT during the order process. Swiss VAT will be collected on each sale of products sold by Amazon irrespective of their price and will be displayed to you as VAT at checkout. For goods sold by non-VAT registered third party sellers which are fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), Amazon will calculate and charge the import fees (import VAT and duty) only if they exceed the marginal threshold (5CHF). These fees will be displayed as Import Fee to you at check out.

The following provisions apply to items that you buy from Amazon Marketplace sellers who don't use Amazon fulfillment services and who are not registered for VAT in Switzerland:

Import tax (VAT) and marginal threshold: Items bought from Amazon websites are subject to import tax. However, this is only levied if the tax amount is at least CHF 5 (marginal threshold). You will find details of the current tax rates on the websites of the Swiss Customs Authorities.

Upper goods value limit: The upper goods value limit (including shipping costs) for VAT-exempt import currently is:

  • CHF 200 for items with a reduced VAT rate of 2.5% (e.g. books)
  • CHF 62 for items with a standard VAT rate of 7.7% (e.g. video games).

For an import declaration, prices in a foreign currency are to be converted to Swiss Francs using the official exchange rate published by the Swiss customs authority.

Import Fees: Orders that are shipped to Switzerland may be subject to import taxes, customs duties and fees ("Import Fees" - "Importgebühren") levied by the destination country. Additional charges for customs clearance must be borne by the recipient. For your convenience, Amazon will estimate and collect the Import Fees, which will be displayed in the checkout as “Import Deposit Fee”, but will not be subject to any refund.

You will not be charged any additional fees if the actual Import Fees exceed the Import Deposit Fees we estimated. For items purchased from third parties and selling partners, the guidelines of the respective sellers apply. Import Fees for orders not fulfilled by Amazon will need to be resolved between the seller and their carrier of choice.

"Postvorweisungstaxe" (mail delivery fee): A shipment becomes taxable as soon as the tax amount exceeds CHF 5.00. In such cases, the Swiss Mail Service charges an additional handling fee, known as the "Postvorweisungstaxe" (mail delivery fee).

Since 2012, a mail delivery fee is payable as below

For letters, parcels (Post, GLS und Hermes) and EMS imports

Country of origin Basic price for customs clearance in CHF

Zone 1

Austria, France, Germany and Italy

11.50

Zone 2

Other countries:

16.00

Swiss Post also charges:

  • A goods value supplement of 3%
  • VAT on the basis of the value of the goods

The maximum price for customs clearance is CHF 70.00 (excluding the import VAT). If you purchase items from a merchant who uses Fulfillment by Amazon ("FBA"), the same Customs, Duties, Taxes and Fees as lined out above apply, but Amazon will calculate and charge the relevant amounts during the order process and relieve you from the customs formalities. If the FBA merchant in question is registered for VAT in Switzerland, VAT will be added to the purchase price irrespective of product price. If the FBA merchant is not registered for VAT in Switzerland, the shipment is taxable as soon as the VAT amount exceeds CHF 5.00 (as outlined above).
