Rosenberg affirmed that the AKA Jessica Jones series might come back to life in a more concrete way, saying, “Marvel is trying to set it up somewhere else. They’re looking at a lot of different possibilities.”
If Marvel is still interested in a Jones series, it seems logical that it may circle back to ABC, given Marvel’s and now Rosenberg’s connection to the network. “I would love that," Rosenberg said. "That would be fabulous. But you know, I don’t know if it’s an ABC show. It might be a cable show, really. The graphic novel is the first one that Marvel did that was meant to serve an adult audience. I toned it down a little bit for network, but it’s very, very easy to translate that into cable. Very easy. God I love that project, other than this one [Red Widow], it’s one of my favorite things that I’ve ever written.”
It should be noted that while Marvel and ABC are both part of the Disney family (and ABC Studios would likely be the one's producing any such series), we've already seen one post-Disney example of Marvel looking at a non-Disney network for a project with a different tone with The Punisher last year at FOX. The Punisher was in development, but never got made as a pilot. Marvel and ABC Studios were indeed the producers on the project.
There's always some pressure when adapting a previously established character. There is a particular pressure with a Marvel character, given both the fanbase and the success of Marvel cinematic universe over the last several years. When asked what her goals for the Jessica Jones pilot script were, Rosenberg said, “The graphic novel was so phenomenal that I really just wanted to bring that to the screen. It’s so raw, and I love this character that is kind of a B-level superhero. She’s not in one world or another, she’s a borderline alcoholic. She’s just a mess, but she’s driven by a need to do something greater, you know? She’s just this delicious character. Fun, you know? I’d love to write that character more, and I hope I get the opportunity. I’ve always said that I’d love to write the female Iron Man, this very f***ed-up female character that also wants to do some good. And that’s who she is.”
We’d love to see Marvel character/story with a more adult tone explored on cable, how about you?
We will keep you updated as details on the project emerge.
