Several sites are being prepared to give the coronavirus vaccination in Newcastle, with three due to be opened next week.

Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary became one of the first places in the country to start issuing the jabs this week, with 400,000 people due to be given the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine at the RVI “as a priority”.

Care home staff are expected to receive their jabs next week with those aged over 80 over the coming weeks.

The Pfizer vaccine is initially stored at temperatures of -70C, and after it is delivered to hubs it can be stored for up to five days in a fridge.

Martin Wilson, chief operating officer at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said 200 to 250 people are currently being vaccinated at the RVI each day.

He added that bigger vaccination centres at large venues, such as sport centres or conference halls, are likely to open early in 2021 to allow for more people to be vaccinated.

  2. SA chief justice prays against 'devil's Covid-19 vaccine'

South Africa's Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has caused an uproar after being filmed praying against Covid-19 "devil vaccines".

In a video shared widely on social media, the chief justice is seen praying against Covid-19 vaccines that "will corrupt DNA".

“I lock out any vaccine that is not of you ...If there be any vaccine that is of the devil, meant to infuse triple-six in the lives of people, meant to corrupt their DNA ... Any such vaccine, Lord God almighty, may it be destroyed by fire in the name of Jesus,” he prays.

His office has confirmed to local media that the film was taken at a public event.

A video of the prayer was shared by journalist Abongile Dumako:

Some South Africans online had had varied reactions to the prayer.

"Tell them Mogoeng-Mogoeng. Any evil products must be nipped in the bud and be eradicated.Bravo! We support the moral and conscious Chief Justice as he continues to castigate and expose evil and impunity in courts and also in the public. Run corrupt leaders run and never look back!" Masooa Motoai tweeted.

"The point of emphasis is that judges are not suppose to disclose their standing on certain issues because someday they might make a ruling on the same issues, and ultimately this goes against the docrine of impartiality and unbiaseness," Vonani Maluleke tweeted.
