Engaging and entertaining -- if not particularly challenging -- Ozark's descent into darker waters is kept afloat by another superb turn from Laura Linney.

Critic Reviews for Ozark Season 2

My hope that "Ozark" would get its sea legs in season two was for naught. Most of what was good in season one remains good, most importantly Linney... But then there are a few excruciating characters and subplots this time around.

Unfortunately, for Ozark, the pressure to keep various narrative plates in the air has led to a much slower pace and some increasingly ludicrous plot twists.

The degree to which "Ozark" slams on the breaks is disconcerting; the downshift in pacing creates an antsy viewing experience that transitions into blandness.

With such smart plotting, the whole enterprise is just another corruption of the American midwest, in this wonderfully astute takedown of the fraudulent American dream and ever-shrinking middle class.

Ozark, too, risks feeling a little familiar.

It continues to be worthwhile for the same reasons we found in the first season, and has partially compensated its less stimulating aspects. [Full Review in Spanish]

Ozark remains a very entertaining series and one that does not deviate much from the formula it developed last year.

May 28, 2019 | Full Review…

Ozark's faults are few and far between. The series barrels along from one tense scene to another and it's nearly impossible to look away.

May 28, 2019 | Full Review…

Some shows are about characters. Some shows are about twists. Some shows are about brutal, violent, often deadly machinations. Netflix's blue-hued crime thriller Ozark is undoubtedly a member of the third group.

May 28, 2019 | Full Review…

Ozark is a different kind of emotional rollercoaster-everyone is on it and they're providing their own seatbelts.

All the while the tension ramps up exponentially to result in a compelling yet unrelenting season.

The master stroke was the messy, awful relationship Ruth (the astoundingly full-on Julia Garner) had with her vile ex-con dad (Trevor Long).

Audience Reviews for Ozark: Season 2

The second season of Ozark could not be more different from the first, especially when it comes to the pacing. In particular the second half, the series captivates with delicate decisions, unexpected twists and does not shy away from torpedoing established characters. Laura Linney steps out of Jason Bateman's shadow and clearly takes command in the long dialogs, which once more proves her incredible acting ability. But this season it feels like the show is rather led by the phenomenal Julia Garner, who moves us in her emotional moments and delights us with her badass one-liners. Even though the action of the second season was much faster and more action-packed, you often had the feeling that it's sometimes too chaotic and a little all over the place. Nevertheless, the authors have managed to structure the events in such a way that there are many possibilities in which direction Ozark could go in season 3.

Ozark: Season 2 finds our favorite family looking to expand the business to launder more money in the region. This time the cartel sends their best lieutenant who is their lawyer to deal with the Byrdes. Marty Byrde takes a back seat half the season and we see more of the Langmores and Snells with their back stories. The women in this season show more power with Linney at the helm of the family and Julia Garner who wins an Emmy for her role as Ruth Langmore. She is ruthless, righteous, strong independent person who loves her family and would do everything to please them and protect them even though they are villainous. The Snells on the other hand were growing and dealing drugs while playing police and governing the region to help with cause. The Byrde family also deals with their daughter who wants to be emancipated from her own family. The family is also moving ahead politically to bring gambling into the region which causes the Kansas City mob to muscle their way and get a portion of the proceeds from the river boats. Season 3 is going to be interesting, let's see where it takes the family.

Ozark Season 2 is already better than Season 1 and that's because of the Superb Performances, Direction and Writing as well as the created Tone of the Show. By now it's a must watch. RATING: 4,5

Just loved season 2 of Ozark. Truly the heir of Breaking Bad in this genre.
  • Sep 09, 2020
Ozark only reaches its full potential in the second season. Every story strand leads to paint a bigger picture and the characters have a satisfying story arc from a personality standpoint.
  • Sep 09, 2020
Dark, criminal and engrossing. The women characters are rock solid (especially Laura Linney). Darlene and Jacob are 2 interesting characters. Poor, poor Mason. The continuing fall of the Byrde family is just jaw dropping.

Knowing it would be hard to top the first season, but it achieves this with more unexpected turns. Solid season.
  • Jul 26, 2020
Still absolutely great but I wasn't quite as hooked as season 1 personally. So many great storylines and the Cade/Ruth relationship was great to watch this season.

Pros: Once again, the tension is constant and thrilling throughout virtually every episode in the season I was a big fan of Ruth and Wendy's character development, leaves things well for S3 The writing, just like S1, is impeccable. Huge credit to the writers Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams The start of the season is fantastic, the first few episodes Laura Linney, Jason Bateman, Julia Garner *Insert Clapping* God these 3 are legends Cons: I thought the final few episodes (9&10) had some strange plot points that I didn't really agree with I wouldn't say this is a con as such, but the Finale wasn't as tense I thought as S1, but it was still very good Charlotte… Enough is enough Overall, ‘Ozark' S2 was a fantastic second season. As I mentioned just, the characters of Ruth and Wendy really grasped my attention during most episodes. I'm very excited to see where their characters are taken in S3. The script is throughout every episode is superb. Every scene is like a negotiation. It's fantastic. Although the finale wasn't as good as the first seasons and some plot points that happened during the end wasn't something I agreed with, this season certainly carries the narrative well going into the third season. Quote – "Some people only respond to a certain kind of pressure" – Jacob Snell Score – 4/5

Season two of Ozark builds upon its solid narrative and provides very strong character development to boot. The series continues to offer up great thrills and nail-biting suspense. Jason Bateman continues to impress and season two showcases very strong performances from Laura Linney and Julia Garner, both of whom shine in this season. Thanks to Ozark's ability to craft and build upon its intriguing characters along with the undeniable dramatic chemistry between Bateman and Linney, by the end of season two I am left wanting more.
