Your Radio Station Might Be Podcasting And You Don't Even Know ItPodcasting is a grass-roots medium. Because the barrier to entry is so low, just about anybody can pick up a microphone and start recording. As I return from three big conferences - Podcast Movement, the RAIN Summit, and the Radio Show - where I spoke to radio programmers about podcasting, I am continually amazed by how, even within our own industry, most podcasting is happening organically. Time and time again, the radio personalities that I run into who are podcasting aren't doing it because management ordered them to do so; they are doing it because they are passionate about creating great audio content.

Shock jock Tom Leykis, Grammar Girl host Mignon Fogarty, APM Reports producer Samara Freemark, and veteran news reporter Richard Davies airchecked two up-and-coming podcasts live onstage. As luck would have it, both of the podcasts were hosted by people who work for radio broadcasting companies, but neither of them were producing an officially sanctioned station podcast. Matt Mundt is the Digital Content Manager at K-Love / Air1 Radio, while Nate John is the Interactive Media Specialist at KPBS, a public radio station in San Diego. What If Howard Stern Had Become A Podcaster?A few years ago, I hosted and produced a food and travel podcast. I would call up chefs, food tour operators, and other culinary notables to ask them about their local food scene. "I've never been to Memphis, what should I eat when I go?" We'd talk about the ...

Ask a radio programmer what the job of a Marketing Director is, and they'll tell you that it's to get more people to listen to the radio station. This answer is correct. It's also wrong. Radio (and media in general) is different from other industries in this respect: ...

As a general rule, I tell radio broadcasters that if they are spending an hour a day on social media, they should spend at least 50 of those minutes on Facebook. Year after year, we see it in Jacobs Media's Techsurvey: Not only do more people have profiles on Facebook ...

How The Amazon Echo Has Changed My Daily RoutineLast year, I bought an Amazon Echo on Prime Day. At first, I wasn't sure if I would really use it. Before joining Jacobs Media two years ago, I hosted a food and travel podcast. During its run, I produced over 100 episodes. As you might expect, I learned a lot in the course of those 100 episodes. And I got better the more I did. I used a small trick -- hiring ...
