Netflix has made a quick decision on the future of Atypical.

The streaming giant has renewed the autism comedy for a second season. The order is for an expanded 10-episode run, up two from its freshman pickup.

Written, created and executive produced by Robia Rashid (How I Met Your Mother, Will & Grace), Atypical is a coming-of-age story from the point of view of Sam (Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum searching for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with changes in their own lives while exploring the question: What does it really mean to be “normal”?

Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rapaport play Gilchrist's parents; Brigette Lundy-Paine and Amy Okuda round out the cast. Seth Gordon executive produces the Sony Pictures Television Studios-produced comedy via his studio-based production company. Leigh also is credited as a producer.

Michelle Dean, who received her doctorate from UCLA and worked at the UCLA Center for Autism and Research and Treatment before joining the faculty of CSU Channel Island, was brought into the production to help guide an accurate depiction of autism spectrum disorder.

The comedy launched Aug. 11 to decent reviews. The show has a 66 Metascore on Metacritic and an 8.1 user score. (Netflix, like Amazon and Hulu, does not release viewership information.)

Atypical is the latest pickup for the deep-pocketed streaming giant. The company recently handed out a two-season order to Ryan Murphy's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel series and added The Eddy, a musical drama from La La Land's Damien Chazelle as well as a Michael Douglas comedy from Chuck Lorre. On the renewal side, Netflix recently picked up critical bomb Friends From College and drama Ozark for second seasons, among others.
