Will There Be A ‘Marvel’s The Defenders’ Season Two?

Where to Stream

Marvel's The Defenders

After two years and 65 episodes of buildup, Marvel’s the Defenders has torn through Netflix like a street-level hero in a hallway. The eight-episode mini-series delivered the team-up fans have been waiting for as well as the resolutions to a few simmering plotlines. After seeing Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist come together, it’s actually gonna be kinda hard to see them go their separate ways.

And all four of them are going solo once again; there are new seasons in production for all four solo shows. But there’s gotta be more Defenders on the way, right? This foursome is really fantastic, they gotta come back for more! So… will they? Let’s think about this…

Did The Defenders Season One end on a cliffhanger?

Yes, it did, but not really a cliffhanger for more Defenders, per se. So, obviously, SPOILER ALERT for the end of Marvel’s The Defenders. You good? The show ends by setting up the new status quos of all the heroes, most likely ones we’ll see in their upcoming seasons. Luke’s back to being Harlem’s hero, Danny has vowed to protect New York City, and Jessica’s reopened Alias Investigations–and it looks like she means it this time. Matt, being Matt, is in the worst way of all of them: in the care of nuns, battered, bruised, and believed to be dead. So, there’s not really a Defenders team anymore, although the three still in NYC are on speaking terms having bonded over their experience fighting ancient ninjas and blowing up a building.

Has Netflix renewed The Defenders for Season Two?

Here’s the bummer: nope! As of now, a second season of The Defenders has not been announced. On top of that, Marvel TV VP Jeph Loeb said back during Comic-Con that he wasn’t sure if there would be a Defenders follow-up. “I don’t know. We haven’t really gotten to that place,” Loeb told Collider. “I don’t know that there will be a Defenders [2].”

Here’s the thing, though: this is pretty much how it always goes. Netflix is always cagey about whether or not a series will get a second season. So far, every single one of Netflix’s Marvel shows have dropped without any confirmation of a follow-up season. That announcement usually comes somewhere between two weeks and four months later (!). For example, Daredevil Season Two was announced 11 days after Daredevil Season One dropped and Iron Fist Season Two wasn’t announced until 126 days after Season One hit!

So yeah, there’s no precedent for a Season Two to be announced before the first season is released, so there’s no reason to worry just yet.

When will The Defenders Season Two hit (if it does get renewed)?

Odds are Netflix will want to cycle through another round of solo seasons before they do another team-up, if another team-up is on the way. As I said earlier, new seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist are on the way (most likely in that order), and that’ll take up all of 2018. It’s possible that Iron Fist Season Two might arrive in 2019, meaning that–if more Defenders is on the way–it could theoretically arrive around this time in 2019.

Decider will be sure to update this article as soon as we have an official release date for Defenders Season Two.
