Anton Yelchin's parents plan to sue over their son's death, their attorney announced Monday.

According to the Associated Press, Victor and Irina Yelchin are planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit Tuesday against Fiat Chrysler, which made the Jeep that killed their son.

The 27-year-old actor, who appears in Star Trek Beyond, was killed by his own car June 19 as he left his home in Studio City, Calif., for a rehearsal. Police said it appeared Yelchin had momentarily exited his car, leaving it in his driveway. The car rolled back down the steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence. Los Angeles county medical examiner spokesman Ed Winter confirmed Yelchin's death was accidental, the result of "blunt traumatic asphyxia."

The actor's vehicle was subject to a recall because the gear shifter has confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly. The SUV was part of a global recall of 1.1 million vehicles by automaker Fiat Chrysler in April. It is not known if Yelchin knew about the recall and had his car serviced for the defect.

A government investigation into the gear shifter found 266 crashes that had injured 68 people as of late June. Fiat Chrysler has said it is speeding up its recall of the vehicle.

At the time of Yelchin's death, Fiat Chrysler extended its "most sincere condolences" to the family and friends of Yelchin, according to a statement emailed to the Detroit Free Press.

According to court documents, AP reports Yelchin died without a will and left behind a nearly $1.4 million estate.

The Yelchins became administrators of their son's estate Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The filing states Yelchin left behind at least $641,000 in personal property and had $731,000 in equity in his home.

The Russian-born actor immigrated to the United States when he was 6 months old with his parents, who were stars of the Leningrad Ice Ballet.

He was best known for playing Chekov in the Star Trek reboot movies, including 2009's Star Trek and 2013's Star TrekInto Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond, which recently arrived in theaters.
