Writer Cynthia Furey has signed with The Gotham Group managers Peter McHugh and Tony Gil. Furey’s pilot BOY UP earned a Top 25 spot in the 2015 Launch Pad Pilot Competition. The comedy pilot, which is a cross between Malcolm in the Middle meets Fresh Off the Boat, follows a nerdy eleven-year-old who thinks he’s finally free of his schoolyard bully, only to discover that his mom is dating his nemesis’ father, and has invited both into their home.
With echoes of classic hits, the script provides a distinctive voice and fresh take on the family sitcom. Praised by our readers for its funny one-liners, clever sight gags, and witty dialogue, the pilot conveyed a clear set up with promising series potential.
Furey has worked as a food writer, recipe developer, and restaurant critic for a number of widely circulated publications, including ZAGAT Restaurant Guides. Her writing talents have earned her opportunities writing for the NBC Diversity Scene Showcase and the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment’s Pitch Lab. She has also served as a consulting producer for NBC/Universal – Wilshire Studios. Most recently she was selected from more than 1,100 applicants to participate in the 2016-2017 CBS Writers Mentoring Program. The eight-month mentoring program is supervised by CBS executives with a focus on developing writer’s scripted material and concludes with a 16-week workshop that gives writers access to key writers room staff, executive producers, and showrunners.
