Castlevania Headed To Netflix in 2017, From Warren Ellis and Adi Shankar

Whew, this is probably going to be dark folks.

News by Mike Williams, .

Netflix has announced that it has greenlit an original animated series based on Konami's Castlevania. The animated series is being developed by Adventure Time producer Fred Seibert's Frederator Studios, with writing from Warren Ellis, the comic book author behind Transmetropolitan, The Authority, Netwave, and Iron Man: Extremis. Castlevania will be produced by Adi Shankar, the guy behind the Punisher: Dirty Laundry and the Power/Rangers fanfilms that everyone loved for being grimdark, alongside Ellis, Seibert, and Kevin Kolde.

It won't be about these people.

Shankar took to Facebook today to offer up a few more details about the project. The folks behind Castlevania have already blocked out two seasons, one in 2017 and a second in 2018.

"Castlevania is a Netflix Original Series with Season 1 launching in 2017 and Season 2 in 2018. Furthermore, I personally guarantee that it will end the streak and be the western world's first good video game adaptation," said Shankar.

The series will seemingly star a new Belmont, instead of the one of the existing versions.

"Inspired by the classic video game series, 'Castlevania' is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself," reads Netflix' synopsis.

We knew about this more than a year ago via Shankar, but not that it was coming from Netflix.

"I'm producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde. It's going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head," said Shankar back in August 2015 on Facebook.

For Warren Ellis, this represents years of effort. He was attached as the scriptwriter for a direct-to-DVD animated film based on Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse back in 2006. He had even blocked out a total of three films. The project never went anywhere and the site dedicated to the film simply stopped updating with any new information in 2009.

It always bugs me when someone licenses a property and then doesn't use the characters from that property. Why not just make your own thing instead? The long-dead Castlevania movie had the same problem when it was supposed to be a "Dracula Begins" kind of movie instead of a Castlevania tale. I hope this show is worthwhile and I'll definitely tune in (and it's not the first time a game-inspired production has diverted from the source material), but it's a peeve of mine.

I'll be damned. Would never have guessed Ellis would still be on board after all this time.

@MattG I think it works better in a case like this, where there is no central protagonist, but a whole legacy of them. This way, you actually get to add something to the overall mythology and not step on toes or risk screwing up a portrayal, never mind that everyone probably has a different preference for who should be adapted.

As a person who loves Castlevania games and doesn't care at all about their stories, I hope this has super cool style. Like giant collars and flashy gems on necklaces and high gothic architecture and wall meat.

Im super worried about the grimdark though; I thought that power rangers thing totally missed the point. The only grimdark that's worked for me is Warhammer/40k, and that's self aware grimdark.

As someone who actually loved Lords of Shadow 1

    (spoiler alert)

As long as the Belmont isn't revealed as Dracula at the end, I'm cool.

The way I see it, this has the potential to be truly awesome or truly terrible. The fact that it’s animated gives me a bit more confidence than if it was in live action however.

For that matter, I have always thought that some Anime movies, TV series and OVA like Hellsing, Blood: The Last Vampire or Vampire Hunter D would actually be good templates for a Castlevania adaptation.

My predictions. It gets rid of the campy Universal monster charm the games always had and doubles down on the grim dark boring of the Western developed games while concentrating on the Vampires and vampire lore. It will be more true blood than castlevania.

Dark, satorical, and ultra-violent? That means it is adult, like me!

Here is hoping there will be a bit more to the series than that, or it goes full-tilt and looks like Ninja Scroll as drawn by Rob Liefeld.
