The Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians, 8-7, in 10 innings tonight to win their first World Series title since 1908. Powered by home runs from Dexter Fowler, Javier Baez and 39-year-old David Ross — in his final MLB game — the Cubs became only the fifth team to come back from being down three games to one to win a World Series Game 7, and the first since the Kansas City Royals in 1985.

Fox showed the long-suffering Cubs fans going bananas outside Wrigley Field — and network brass likely did the same as ratings for Game 7 are expected to be massive. The Series thus far has drawn viewership not seen since 1997, when the Indians lost to the Florida Marlins, also in seven games.

In addition to being their first win in more than a century, it also was the Cubs’ first World Series appearance since 1945, when they lost to the Detroit Tigers in seven games. That had been the longest title drought for any MLB team — a stigma now passed on to the Indians, who last won in 1948.

The Cubbies’ win at Progressive Field in Cleveland denies the Forest City’s attempt to win two major professional sports trophies in the same calendar year — after having not won any since 1964. In June, the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors to win the franchise’s first NBA championship in its 46-year history. Led by Finals MVP LeBron James, who was at tonight’s game, the Cavs also came back from being down three games to one — the first NBA team ever to pull that off.

Among the Hollywood folks at tonight’s game were Cubs fanatics Bill Murray, John Cusack and Bonnie Hunt along with and Charlie Sheen, who famously played a hotshot Cleveland Indians pitcher in the first two Major League movies.
