East Village Tenants Say ‘Enough Is Enough’ to Alleged Predatory Landlord

Karen Platt has been channeling her frustrations through the satisfying scrape of chalk across concrete. After years of living with dust, noise, and health hazards caused by construction, repeated and seemingly relentless service cut-offs, and what she says are intentional moves by her landlord to clear her (and other rent-regulated tenants like her) out of her longtime home at 522 East 5th Street in the East Village, Platt’s sidewalk messages reveal she has reached a breaking point: “Lack of services is harassment” and “Enough is Enough.”
As Platt explained to B+B, since Icon Realty Management bought her building, things took a turn for the miserable. “I’ve lived in New York my whole life and I’ve never, ever been treated like this,” she said.

Years back, I was day drinking at an unassuming deep-fryer dive in Detroit. A surly looking guy with a grease-stained apron and hangover slouch from hell emerged out of a kitchen. My friend seated at the bar next to me guffawed and nudged me discreetly. “Look, it’s John Brannon.” And so it was. The hardcore legend could have been beer-sweating over my tater tots for all I know– and deep down, I sort of hope that was the case.

The East Village just got a new sandwich shop, so it’s only fair that Williamsburg get one also. Bunk, the Portland, Oregon transplant we told you about back in August, has finally opened in the old Max space on Driggs, just in time to serve up its Thanksgiving sando.
NYC ID Enrollment Site Pops Up in East Village, Hit It Before the Goodies Are Gone
If you’re a downtowner who’s been lazy about trekking uptown to get a city ID card, heads up: an IDNYC enrollment site is popping up at Middle Collegiate Church during the last three weeks of December.
You’ll want to move on this, too: December 31 is the last day you’ll be able to sign up for free year-long memberships at 33 museums and cultural institutions. After you’ve snagged the card, you’ll have to apply separately with each place for membership, but it’s worth it. Perks include discounted tickets at the Public Theater, 20% off food and drink at Joe’s Pub and The Library, half off movie tickets and same-day tickets to performances at BAM, and free admission to The Met, MoMA PS1, and Brooklyn Museum.

“Before opening a new restaurant you need a bottle of aspirin and your wife’s permission, which can take a few weeks and is sometimes harder to secure than a loan,” Shane Covey said to laughs. Covey was seated at Edwin and Neal’s, a seafood restaurant he’s opening on East 6th Street, just a shell’s throw away from his First Avenue oyster bar, Upstate.

The outrage was more or less instantaneous when Gerber Group announced that the restaurant inside of the new Hotel Indigo would be named after Lower East Side eco activist David Wilkie, aka Adam Purple. Local blog Bowery Boogie called the tribute “a tad sacrilegious” and then outright “clueless,” and EV Grieve commenters called the operators of Mr. Purple “parasitic carpetbaggers” and worse.

Dromedary Bar Will Serve Up Tiki Drinks and Fried-Cricket Deviled Eggs
Bushwick already has a heck of a tiki bar in El Cortez, but soon it’ll get some company in the form of Dromedary.
Michael Lombardozzi, the drinks guy (he’s not big into the word “mixologist”) who put countless customers of One if By Land, Two if By Sea into face-sucking mode, is striking out on his own and opening an “urban tiki” bar on the corner of Irving and Menahan, near the Bushwick-Ridgewood border.
