 The
Bureau of Training and three other FDNY units operate
at the New York City Fire Academy. The Academy is situated
on 27 acres of land on Randall's Island near the hub
or the Triboro Bridge connecting the three boroughs
of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. This training center
is adjacent to 68 acres of parkland, an outdoor recreation
area consisting of tennis courts; baseball, softball
and soccer fields; and walking, jogging and cycling
paths.
These facilities are also utilized
by the Academy and its personnel, the location affording
members of the Department the Opportunity to engage
in their physical fitness programs. It also provides
a playing site for the various teams and leagues that
are associated with "The Bravest."
The 22,000-seat Downing Stadium on
Randall's Island is just 350 feet west of the site and
is utilized by the Academy for special presentations,
gatherings of fire-service personnel, public relations
programs and athletic events.
There are eleven buildings on the site,
known informally as "The Rock." There is also
a 200,000 gallon water supply tank, a suction pit for
drafting tests, and a heavy-duty storm draining system
to accommodate water runoff from fire simulations. There
are also gasoline and diesel fuel pumps and a 300-car
parking lot .
The New York Transit Authority has
installed tracks and two subway cars-one old style and
one new-in order to provide a suitable facility for
the development of techniques for dealing with subway
fires and other emergencies. This adds that degree of
reality which seems to prevail throughout the entire
complex.
A Picnic-lunch area allows staff, students,
schoolchildren and other visitors a place to enjoy a
sunny day during the midday break. A specially designed
chauffeur training course features a hill, controllable
traffic lights, intersections and movable electric "pop-ups"
which present the chauffeur-in-training with every type
emergency situation. It is illuminated with street lights
for 24-hour-a-day operations.
There is also a helicopter landing site on the grounds.
