Apartment building dispute at Barclays Center site leads to lawsuits, angry words

The first residential building at Pacific Park Brooklyn – the former Atlantic Yards site that so far is home only to the Barclays Center – has faced construction delays, leading to a lawsuit earlier this month between the project developer Forest City Ratner and the construction manager, Skanska USA Building. That came about after Skanska and its subcontractors ceased work late last month.

The complaints are over why the construction has been delayed and who should be responsible for cost overruns. And let’s just say the legal filings don’t exactly come across as “it’s not personal, it’s business.”

Marathon Catskills/Hudson Valley casino hearings today

12:20 PM UPDATE: The video feed appears to be broken at the moment, but it worked for the first four hours. Some comments below….

The New York Gaming Facility Location Board is meeting today in Poughkeepsie to discuss the nine Orange County/Hudson Valley casino bids.

My sense is there will be a large amount of opposition expressed at the largest bid, the $1.5 billion Sterling Forest Resort plan by Genting.

NJ state Senate asks NY to reject the Sterling Forest casino bid

The state Senate on Monday unanimously passed a resolution urging the state of New York to reject the $1.5 billion Sterling Forest casino bid when decisions are made as soon as next month on issuing four licenses among three regions.

The resolution, sponsored by state Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge, states that the proposed Tuxedo, N.Y. casino “would impart an incalculable environmental footprint on this preserved area, threatening New Jersey’s drinking water, and bringing substantial traffic and pollution into the area.”

“We understand that it’s up to New York to determine where they build casinos, but all we’re saying is, ‘Find an alternate location to this one that won’t harm our drinking supply,’” Sarlo said after the voice vote.

More details on that American Dream Meadowlands legal dispute with insurance company

Let’s take a closer look at the 71-page complaint filed last week by ACE American Insurance Company against American Dream Meadowlands developer Triple Five and a half-dozen subsidiaries (with the note that a disputed $5.2 million judgment does not threaten the fate of what is to wind up as a $4 billion shopping and entertainment project):

ACE attorneys describe the former Xanadu site as a “cursed project [that] has yet to be completed due, variously, to funding shortfalls and unfavorable market conditions. There has no shortage of press coverage and commentary on this situation, on the challenges this project has faced, and on the various political channels, ebbs and flurries that have plagued its progress…. It currently molders, in much maligned Day-Glo colors, just off Interstate 95 next to Giants Stadium.”

New York officials hearing from the public regarding 17 casino bids for four licenses

[NOTE: click here for the Tuesday 12-hour Orange County/Hudson Valley hearing on Tuesday and for the Eastern/Southern Tier on Wednesday.]

The 12 hours of public comments on the New York Capital Region are underway today.

Many of the presenters have expressed opposition to various bids – there are five in this region, compared to nine in Orange County/Hudson Valley (hearings coming Tuesday) and three in the Eastern/Southern Tier (Wednesday). Most of the opposition I heard was against the East Greenbush casino plan (see below). The Hard Rock, Howe Caverns, and Schenectady bids all had significant backing overall, at least from those who spoke today.

New York Urban League Classic: for many, the tailgating’s the thing

The annual New York Urban League Classic is far more than just a football game, as The Record’s Aaron Morrison reports:

“At kickoff of Saturday’s New York Urban League Classic football game between Howard and Morgan State universities, there were more people tailgating in the parking lot than there were in the seats at MetLife Stadium.

That’s because “the Classic,” as it’s known to longtime attendees, is less about pigskin and more about social tradition, about friends and old classmates getting together each year to celebrate their common tie.
