Billboard music Award is given by Billboard, the prominent music publication from United States. It was first started in 1989 and held every year since then. BMAs gives awards to artists as per their sales of DVD, number of downloads and number of times they were played on radio. 10. Categories renamed

Till 2006, Billboard had award names like ‘Billboard 200 Album of year’ but since 2011, Billboard has changed the category names to the top “——“of the year for all its award names. For instance:
Billboard 200 Album of Year has changed to Top Pop Song of Year, Billboard 200 Artist of Year has changed to Top Pop Album of Year, Hot 100 Song of Year has changed to Top Pop Artist of Year, and Hot 100 Artist of Year has changed to top Dance Song of Year etc.
There are about 23 award categories which have renamed. There is an exhaustive list of awards which can be checked on Billboard website.

 

9. Removed categories of 1989-2006

There are some categories which have been removed from the Billboard Music Award. These are:
Top New Male Artist of Year, Top New Female Artist of Year, Top New Group of Year, Top Modern Rock Artist of Year, Top Modern Rock Track of Year, Top Classical Crossover Artist of Year, Top Classical Crossover Album of Year, Top Independent Album Artists of Year, Top Independent Album of Year, Top selling Single of Year, Top Rhythmic Top 40 Title of Year, Top Soundtrack Single of Year.

6. Century Award of Billboard

This award has been given to George Harrison in 1992, Buddy Guy in 1993, Billy Joel in 1994, Joni Mitchel in 1995, Carlos Santana in 1996, Chet Atkins in 1997, James Taylor in 1998, Emmylou Harris in 1999, Randy Newman in 2000, John Mellencamp in 2001, Annie Lennox in 2002, Sting in 2003, Stevie Wonder in 2004, Tom Petty in 2005, Tony Bennett in 2006.From 2007 to 2010, no award.

 

5. Icon Award

Icon award is a new category started since 2011; and was given to Neil Diamond in that same year, in 2012 to Stevie Wonder and in 2013 to Prince.

 

4. Millennium Award

This is also a new category and started only since 2011. In 2011, it was given to Beyonce Knowles and in 2012; it was given to Whitney Houston.

 

3. Spotlight Award

Michael Jackson was first to receive the Spotlight award in 1988 by Billboard as the first artist who had five number ones in a row from only one album. Katy Perry was awarded this same honor in 2012 by Billboard. She was the first female and the second artist to have this record.

 

2. Achievement Award for artists

This award was given to Madonna in 1996, Janet Jackson in 2001, Cher in 2002, Destiny’s Child in 2004.

Venues
In 1989-91, The BMAs show was held in Barker Hangar, Santa Monica, from 1992-94 it was held at The Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles. In 1995, the show was organized in The Coliseum, New York City. In 1996, it was held in Center for Performing Arts and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas. From 1997-2006 BMAs was held in MGM Grand Garden Arena, from 2007 to 10 there was no awards were held and from 2011 to 2012 it was organized in MGM Grand Garden Arena including current year of 2013.
