The Sony Corporation and CBS Inc. said their CBS/Sony Inc. unit, which produces digital audiodisks in Japan, plans to make compact audiodisks in the United States.

CBS Records will market compact disks imported from Japan in the United States in the first quarter of 1983, and CSB/Sony will manufacture the disks in 1984. The announcement came a day after Japan's Hitachi Ltd. said it had agreed to supply digital audiodisk players to Thomson-Brandt S.A. of France starting next year. An audiodisk contains music stored in a computer code. The code is read by a laser beam and converted back into the signals that make sound.
