Doug Morris Is Hired From Universal, Creating Ripple Effects Through Industry

Sony Music Entertainment on Wednesday said it recruited Doug Morris, the chairman of Universal Music Group, as its new chief executive, potentially touching off a wave of structural shifts in a recorded music business still adjusting to life in the digital era.

Mr. Morris will assume the new position July 1, Sony Corp. said. The move takes him from the world's largest recorded-music company to the second-largest, which he is likely to try to beef up into a serious rival.
