Coldplay’s Viva La Vida simultaneously tops the US and UK album charts


Album sets worldwide record on the iTunes Store

25 JUNE 2008 -- Coldplay’s latest album, Viva La Vida, today debuts at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 US album chart with over 720,000 copies sold in America in its first week of release there. In the UK, where Viva La Vida is the fastest-selling album of the year, the album is the top of the chart for the second week in a row, and no. 1 rankings continue to come in from around the world including Japan, Australia, Canada, France and Germany.

Already the biggest album pre-order in iTunes’ history, Viva La Vida also set the record for highest first-week album sales ever on the iTunes® Store worldwide. Yesterday the album’s title song surpassed Clocks as the band’s biggest-selling single to date on the iTunes Store. Viva La Vida reached no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US last week, marking Coldplay’s first Hot 100 no. 1 single ever, and this week it debuted at no. 1 on the UK singles chart.

The band celebrated the release of Viva La Vida with a free concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Monday night and will launch their North American tour with two sold out dates at The Forum in Los Angeles on July 14th and 15th. Produced by Brian Eno and Markus Dravs, Viva La Vida is the follow-up to 2005’s X&Y, which also debuted at no. 1 on The Billboard 200, the UK album chart and in numerous other countries, going on to sell 10 million copies worldwide to date.
