Experts slugfest: Our final 2024 Oscar nominations predictions

Will the Producers Guild of America Awards and Best Picture go 10 for 10 for the first time? Is Frances Fisher going to pull it off again? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their Oscar nominations predictions and BAFTA nominations reactions.

Best Picture may be the easiest category to predict in very long time. Famous last words? After “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” made it into the typically international film-averse PGA, it’s hard to imagine them missing the Oscar lineup as well. But if one of the 10 films were to miss, which one would it be? And what would replace it? Could it be “Origin,” which has Fisher’s seal of approval this year? The Ava DuVernay film starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor saw a surge in celebrity endorsements during nominations voting. Will this be another “To Leslie”?

Meanwhile, we remain flummoxed by the Best Supporting Actress category, where it feels like open season after frontrunner Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) and Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer“). Can Danielle Brooks hang on despite “The Color Purple’s” precursor and box office disappointments? Will Penelope Cruz translate her surprise SAG Award nomination for “Ferrari” into a fifth Oscar nomination?

Elsewhere, we discuss BAFTA nominations, which were full of snubs and surprises.
