“Adventure Time,” “Portlandia,” “The Simpsons” and the Alex Gibney documentary “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God” are among the juried winners of Primetime Emmys announced today by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Juried categories are screened by a panel of professionals in the relevant peer group, with the option of rewarding any number of Emmys to the eligible contenders. There is no nominations process in these categories, but unanimous approval from the panel is required for an Emmy to be rewarded.
Six people met that standard for outstanding individual achievement in animation: Andy Ristaino for character design on “Adventure Time,” Jenny Gase-Baker for background paint on “Disney Mickey Mouse Croissant de Triomphe,” Joseph Holt for art direction on the same program, Alberto Mielgo for art direction on “Disney Tron: Uprising,” Andy Bialk for character design on “Dragons: Riders of Berk” and Paul Wee for character animation on the most recent “Treehouse of Horror” episode of “The Simpsons.”
In addition, three winners were named for costunes in a variety program or special: “The 55th Annual Grammy Awards,” “The Men Who Built America” and “Portlandia.”

Finally, HBO’s presentation of “Mea Maxima Culpa” earned an Emmy for exceptional merit in documentary filmmaking. A WGA documentary screenplay nominee early this year, “Mea” was a somewhat surprising omission from the most recent Oscar race.
The juried Emmys will be presented at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony Sept. 15 at the Nokia Theatre, which will air in a two-hour edited version Sept. 21 on FXX.
