Days before Christmas Day, Guillermo del Toro fans can look forward to his new Dreamworks Animation animated series, “Trollhunters,” premiering on Netflix.

The 26 episode-series (the most the streaming service has ever released at one time) follows 15-year-old Jim (Anton Yelchin) and his two best friends, Toby (Charlie Saxton) and the benevolent troll Blinky (Kelsey Grammer), who make the startling discovery that beneath their hometown lies a hidden battle between good trolls and bad. Ahead of its debut, Netflix released a “Behind the Magic” featurette, where del Toro and the cast talk about the inspiration of the show and their characters.

“I wanted a series that had a lot of mythology behind it but dealt with kids that were very regular,” says creator and executive producer del Toro. “There’s a poetic component to it and a magical component to it.”

Eight years in the making, “Trollhunters” will have kids and their parents cheering on an unlikely yet lovable hero who has to save the world.

“What I’ve always loved about Guillermo is that his imagination knows no bounds,” says Charlie Saxton, the voice of Toby. With Ron Perlman adding, “It’s beautiful. I’m not surprised because Guillermo’s filmmaking is such a feast for the senses.” Also included in the video below are Kelsey Grammer and Steven Yeun.

“Trollhunters” premieres globally on December 23.
