Boy band mania propelled New Kids On The Block to the top of Billboard’s Top 100 in 1989, first with “I’ll Be Loving You (Forever)” and later with “Hangin’ Tough.” And it was a killer year for Paula Abdul, who made her Billboard No. 1 debut that year with three tracks: “Straight Up,” “Forever Your Girl,” and “Cold Hearted.”
But it wasn’t all emerging artists cinching the top charts. Eighties radio favorites like Madonna, Bon Jovi, and Prince stepped in to snag the No. 1 spot, too. All in all, the ’80s closed out with a pretty stellar year, and you can reflect on the full list of 1989’s Billboard hits below.
