Elton John performed “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” from the 2019 John biopic Rocketman, at the 2020 Oscars on Sunday night (Feb. 9). The song is a nominee for best original song for John and longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin at this year’s awards.
Sir Elton performed on a bright red Yamaha piano, dressed in a spangly jacket with a rocket pinned on the lapel. John’s full-band performance (including a trio of backing singers) of the soundtrack single was set in front of a screen with animated graphics to represent the movie, as well as a pair of gigantic stars reminiscent of John’s iconic sunglasses.

“Love Me Again” was the sole new composition for the soundtrack to Rocketman, which otherwise leans on hits from the Elton John catalog. Shortly after his performance, John and Taupin won best original song. The Oscar win is John’s second, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer winning in 1995 along with co-writer Tim Rice for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King. The win is the first for Taupin.
