Son By Four was the big success story of this year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards, presented last night (April 26) at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach, Fla., as the culmination of the Billboard Latin Music Conference.
The act won seven awards, including Hot Latin Tracks artist of the year and Billboard Latin 50 artist of the year. Its hit “A Puro Dolor” was named Hot Latin track of the year, pop track of the year, and tropical/salsa track of the year.
Other multiple winners were Christina Aguilera, whose “Mi Reflejo” won pop album of the year in the female and new-artist categories, and Enrique Iglesias, whose “Solo Me Importas Tu” won for Latin dance Club Play track of the year and Latin dance-mix single of the year.
Special achievement honors were given to regional Mexican icons Los Tigres Del Norte, percussionist Mongo Santamaria, vocalist Thalia, and East Los Angeles band Los Lobos.
The 12th edition of the Billboard Latin Music Awards included performances by superstars such as Alejandro Sanz, Alejandro Fernandez, and Gloria Estefan. The show will air Sunday (April 29) on the Telemundo network. The awards are based on the Billboard Latin charts for the period from Feb. 5, 2000, to Jan. 27, 2001.
