EXO’s ‘Obsession’ Leads K-Pop Group to Fourth Billboard 200 Entry, No. 1 on World Digital Song Sales Chart

Four becomes EXO's lucky number on the charts this week as the band score their fourth Billboard 200 entry and fourth No. 1 on World Digital Song Sales.

Four becomes EXO’s lucky number on the charts this week as the band score their fourth Billboard 200 entry and fourth No. 1 on World Digital Song Sales.

In its second week on the charts, the chart-topping boy band’s latest release Obsession: The 6th Album rises on a slew of charts, led by the band’s fourth appearance on the all-genre Billboard 200. The new LP enters at No. 198 on the Billboard 200, selling 4,000 copies in the week ending Dec. 5, according to Nielsen Music. In addition to its first week sales from last week, Obsession has now sold 6,000 copies in America now.

EXO can now take the title as the K-pop artist with the second-most entries on America’s definitive albums chart. From their first entry with 2015 full-length Exodus to today’s Obsession, EXO has four entries on the Billboard 200, while the band’s Korea-focused splinter unit EXO-K (made up of EXO members Baekhyun, Suho, Kai, Chanyeol, D.O, and Sehun) has one entry with 2014’s Overdose EP. Before this latest release, EXO was tied with G-Dragon with three Billboard 200 entries apiece, only behind BTS who have 10 entries on the chart.

When it comes to EXO’s album sales in America, their best-selling LP is last year’s EXO 5: Don’t Mess Up My Tempo which has sold 50,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen Music. It’s followed by 2015’s Exodus: The 2nd Album (11,000 sold, with an additional 4,000 sold for its Love Me Right – The 2nd Album repackage), The War: The 4th Album (11,000 sold), The 1st Album ‘XOXO’ (6,000) and, now, Obsession: The 6th Album

Over on the World Albums chart, Obsession rises from its No. 3 debut to No. 2 this week, only blocked by SuperM which interestingly includes two members of EXO, Baekhyun and Kai, as part of the K-pop supergroup. EXO has had nine albums to reach the Top 2 slots of World Albums and earned four No. 1s.

EXO also claim their fourth No. 1 entry on Billboard‘s World Digital Song Sales chart as their album’s new title track jumps to the top spot. Rising from No. 3 to No. 1, “Obsession” sold another 1,000 copies in the week ending Dec. 5, according to Nielsen Music, bringing its total sales to 2,000 cumulative copies.

With the addition of this latest single, as well as new Obsession songs the feathery industrial-pop banger “Trouble” (which debuted at No. 19 on last week’s chart) and the chant-heavy hip-hop joint “Jekyll” (No. 22), EXO grows their total career amount of entries on World Digital Song Sales to 77. Among all artists on World Digital Songs, they have the second-most career entries on the chart ever.

Among EXO’s 10 top-selling songs in America, their best-seller is their 2016 single “Monster” — which was also their first song to hit No. 1 on World Digital Songs — with 69,000 copies sold in America to date, according to Nielsen Music. It’s followed closely by 2013 breakout single “Growl” (with 62,000 sold), then “Overdose” (58,000), “Call Me Baby” (56,000), “Mama” (38,000), “Wolf” (36,000), “Love Me Right” (34,000), “History” (32,000), “Lotto” (31,000), and “Ko Ko Bop” (27,000).

With two of EXO’s nine members already currently serving South Korea’s mandatory military service, as well other members nearly at the age where they will need to serve, Obsession may be the last group album we get from the band for a few years — and making sure to do so with a major reminder of their strong chart legacy.
