Guillermo del Toro might have stepped away from The Hobbit in May, but the Mexican director still feels the pain acutely now that the project is finally moving forward.
“I have a huge heartbreak” he told Britain’s Independent newspaper. “I have incredible sadness. I have disappointment.”
“A piece of me has been dented forever.”
Del Toro’s former collaborator Peter Jackson was confirmed as the replacement for the film in October and principal photography will begin February 2011 in New Zealand.
Del Toro had moved to the country to work on the project which then went through a series of dramatic delays, primarily based around financial problems at MGM.
“To relocate your entire family, life, home for a period that long without any certainty that it will get made or when it will get made. It starts to become very worrisome.”
The director added that he tries “not to deal with regrets.” His decision to step away was “the best for me and the project.”
