[Warning: This story contains spoilers from Monday’s Gotham.]
The dust hasn’t settled since Commissioner Essen’s dramatic Gotham exit during Monday’s episode, but actress Zabryna Guevara isn’t going to get the chance to rest up after facing off against the proto-Joker. Instead, she’s packing up and moving to 1970s New York as part of the cast of Baz Luhrmann‘s upcoming Netflix drama, The Get Down.
Guevara will be a recurring character on the hip-hop drama, playing the wife of Giancarlo Esposito‘s character, an inner-city pastor. “Jimmy Smits plays his brother, and we have this whole long relationship — we’ve all known each other for a long time, and it’s going to be an interesting thing to see how it all unfolds,” she said, laughing. The series also stars Dope‘s Shameik Moore, Paper Towns‘ Justice Smith and newcomers Tremaine Brown Jr. and Herizen F. Guardiola.
“Jaden Smith is also in it and I got to work with Jada [Pinkett Smith] in Gotham and now I’m working with her son, which is kind of coincidental, hilarious and absolutely wonderful,” said Guervara.
The series, which follows the birth of hip-hop and disco, is “the complete antithesis of Gotham,” she said. “That show has this dark brooding, pathos, but this new show is the Bronx in the ‘70s, all period clothing and the outfits — the polyester garb that they’ve brought out have been just amazing! I’ve loved the costume fittings as much as I’ve loved playing the scenes.”
The Get Down marks Luhrmann’s TV debut, with the Academy Award nominee writing and directing the season’s first two episodes and the season finale, as well as co-executive producing the series with Shawn Ryan. The series, from Sony Pictures Television, will debut on Netflix next year.
